The Salt Lake County Commissioners are currently involved in a freedom infringing struggle to shut down a theater in the area because of the controversial film the theater is showing which the commission deems. as "pornographic" The controversy revolves around the X-rated film Deep Throat which is currently running at a theater in Magna. Members of the commi s~ sion, in order to preserve the image of objectivity, have argued against the film on the grounds of city laws which prohibit "certain things" (kiddies (The Goat) December 22 - January 19 You are rather of a studious nature and: take some delight in unraveling some mystery. To give their decisions further credibility the commission utilizes the services of a so-called "advisory council" whose job it is to screen films to make sure they comply with city ordinances. One readily concedes that Utah is a religious state by nature. But it must quickly be added that if the religious leaders are afraid that a couple of “obscene” films will undermine all of their efforts their churches must indeed stand on quicksand filled with a congregation of sacrilegious hypocrites. If obscene films are nothing but moral underriders and temptors of the good people, let the good people resist and show where their commitments lay. If the issue is obscenity, lets examine the definition of the word. Dictionaries describe the word as meaning anything which is offensive to modesty or decency. Is it of‘SenSive to whow the human body engaged in acts of love and or passion? Or is it obscene to have films which portary Black Americans as lazy shiftless, good for nothing rapists, or Native Americans as thieving savages, or Chicanos as sleepy do nothings? Is it obscene to wage war in the name of freedom and religion or it obscene to talk frankly about the human experience? Is it offensive to show the body and be honest or to hide it and pretend that those things don't really happen...is the truth offensive? For those Americans who profess to love freedom..it is YOU who should be enraged when a group of people get together and tell you what you can or can't see--what is morally good or bad for you. You have a mind and theater to political owners.. either ' mail with (gasp) a body and the God given abil- ity to use both. If something offends _ you in a film you're viewing you have several options; you can sit there like an idiot and be offended or you can get the hell out. You don't have the right to tell someone else that he or she Should be offended or that they can't see the film because you don't like the content.
