Show IA Autumn 2, - Venceremos Editorial On Being Editor-in-Chief Á s the new editor-in-chief of the VENCEREMOS staff for this year, there are times when I believe that I am honored to be selected to this very important position, and that 1 am following in the footsteps of my former colleagues, knowing that 1 have a chance to improve my self and my mind by serving the Chicana/o community in Salt Lake City and abroad. Most of my friends have cheered me on, for doing the right thing and hoping I can stay true to La Causa. At other times, 1 truly feel overwhelmed by the enormity of it all. Being in i this position to me means I have a responsibility, not only to myself, but also to the larger Chicana/o community to keep as informative and active as possible. Whats Inside: Page 3 Chiapas Pase 4 Huerta Interview Page 6 by Tomas Martinez This position of being an editor-in-chief means I have to wear many hats, so to speak, in order to get my point across. Workers. I try to do all these things with the help of my staff. It is quite an undertaking, and when I think as to why I would want to be involved with such an undertaking I can only come up with one answer. Because it is worth it. As one colleague of mine once said to me, “Something worth doing never comes easily.”, I have to remeber why this paper was formed: asa voice for progressive Chicana/o literature. There will be times when I feel overwhelmed and think I don't want to continue, but I must always remember that no matter what, the paper will come out and it is important for us all. No matter how overwhelminyg it is. At times, I become a teacher, where I educate those masses who are unaware of the problems and issues that affect Chicanas/os in society. Other times, I must become an activist, at the front lines with the rest of La Raza, shouting to those who opprese us, “Ya Basta!”, sacrificing myself for the sake of others. Most importantly, I recognize myself as a journalist who writes articles that are important to the Chicana/o, such as problems in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, or an interview with one of the founders of the International Farm Cartas Estimados Mi saludo a ustedes y mis felicitaciones tambien, por estar Ustedes involuncrados en la valiosa labor de fomentar cultura y consciencia a nuestros pueblos latinos aquí en Utah. Yo tambien, como Ustedes veo la necesidad de despertar consciencias, y levantar el animo a nuestra gente en este país. Un siglo está pasando y creo que todos hemos aprendido bastante, and so on...
