Show S.S. SCHOOL NEWS PAGE A4 MARCH 27, 2015 SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS Yikkity Yak, Don't Talk Back SOUTH SUMMIT JOURNALISM STAFF Technology has developed at an alarmingly fast rate, with we the people left like cavemen to dabble with the unforeseen advancements. Another side effect of advancing technology is the case of it being readily available for anyone to create programs both positive and negative. Tech schools have students using information and skills taught to gather and build programs designed for the collection of private information and anonymous delivery of any file or material. As of late, one of these programs has been creating difficulties for students at South Summit High School. Yik Yak, an app where users can post a "yak" which is an anonymous post for anyone to see within a ten mile radius, has been the venue for students to criticize each other with no social guilt directed back. Comments range from the typical internet rudeness to the absurdness of cyber bullying. On Oct. 3, 2014, The Buffington Post published an editorial entitled "Why Your College Campus Should Ban Yik Yak," which asserted that Yik Yak's anonymous messaging boards "are like bathroom stalls without toilets. They're useless, they're sources of unhelpful or harmful conversations, and they're a complete eyesore." This app, is just a side effect of a direct socially deprived culture in our world today. While it has the potential for any use, it's all that much easier for anyone to corrupt a platform with a single post. It is what it is. Social media technology is the perfect growing ground for what can be the ignorance of a human being and the allowance of Spring cleaning: A Consideration STUDENT REPORTER: KRISTEN LLOYD bullying. With this idea in mind, we would ask parents to be a part of the solution to prevent these events in the future. Be a parent, not a friend. Educators roles are to teach and guide students and to remind students that under school policy phones are not to be used during class time. It's not up to the school to police the social media relationships of students, after all we don't pay your child's phone bills. So, it should up to you the parents to manage the apps on your student's phone. With the recent warm weather, spring is creeping up on us quickly. Normally with spring, people think of the term spring cleaning and even shudder at the thought. However, a clean house and environment is more beneficial than the satisfactory feeling that comes with it. It also is good for your health. Chores like vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing sur- faces actually prevent allergens from entering the air and mold from growing on surfaces. It keeps away more than germs though. When a house is organized the appearance of insects and other pests are decreased because they have nowhere to hide and breed. Organization also prevents everyday injuries like tripping on clutter and items falling onto someone. The activity also burns calories as well with all that mopping, vacuuming, and The Rite of Spring Was Museum presented at N.S. Elementary School _ ff1 rac-s e oFoi! 13aK alb ats; L4 1 Last week students at North Summit Elementary Learn About "People from Books" Fourth grade students chose a person to read about, then put together a demon3tration poster and dressed as that person - someone they liked - choosing a character that had been a 'real person" who had pursued their "dream" or career, and completed their "project" or "invention" or had made a difference in our world!. These students read about the person and then "playacted" that person for parents and visitors. They tried to recreate that person in dress and with an essay they memorized as if they were that person. Donations to the North Summit Elementary School Arts Program on behalf of this program helps them to fund their costumes and other projects. The "Wax Museum" was a great success. Students put their acts into motion for their peers and then again that evening did it for the public to attend. Rachele Joiner of Henefer says the best part of the Wax Museum project was getting to know her character. She had never heard of her before this assignment and found out that they really had a lot in common. She also really loved seeing the people smile at her when she said her lines and did a couple dance moves. Her person she represented was born in 1906. Josephine Baker was a dancer and singer who became wildly popular in France during the 1920s. She also devoted much of her life to fighting racism. And was known as the "Black Pearl, or "Bronz Venus, among other names. Josephine Baker had several children, and died in 1975. Rachele had fun doing this project! wiping really getting you active. After the house is clean, stress levels decrease and mental state increases. The best benefit, though, is that a clean counter will encourage the cooking of homemade meals. Homemade meals are always a better alternative to frozen foods or fast food. So as spring comes around the corner and all the flowers are blossoming, consider how much good a little tidying up could do for you. STUDENT REPORTER: LARISSA PEARCE It's that time of year when the snow is melting, the weather is warm, and everyone is excited to be outside. It's spring! But is it just the warm weather and arrival of flowers budding that make it spring or is there something more than just a changing of seasons going on? Yes there is - in fact there is a significant astronomical rea- son for an equinox. What is an equinox? The word equinox literally means; "equal night". Because the Sun is positioned above the equator, day and night are about equal in length all over the world during the equinoxes. On March 20, 2015 at precisely 6:45 pm EDT was the south hemisphere equinox, the Sun will cross directly over the Earth's equator. This moment is known as the Vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumnal equinox in Southern Hemisphere. It is al time when the moon blocks the sun and the light is shot through both sides. The equinox can be seen from all around the world, however, in some parts it is only partly visible. The Vernal Equinox will not come around again until Spring 2017. The significance of the equinox is that it is the rebirth of life, the start of a new beginning. The flowers start to bloom and their sweet scent fills the open air and we know summer is right around the corner beckoning us to a new year. If you were unable to see the Vernal Equinox the Lunar Eclipse is April 4, 2015 at 9:03 am UTC. This year would be a great year to get out and see all the interesting phenomonona our beautiful world has to offer. False Images STUDENT REPORTER: SKYLIER LEAVITT Suicide is one of the nation's top causes of death. It's a serious matter, but it is handled so lightly due to our culture. Western Nations cower at the thought of discussing this topic, and it's become a problem that is not looked at but ran away from. The odds and the likeliness of success are against you. More than 2 / 3's of attempts result in failure, and with that comes pain and damage. Suicidal thoughts are most common in 14-25 year olds, with women making more attempts, and men having more success. The odds for success increase as time goes on. Those older than sixty have a much higher chance of success with 1 / 3 of attempts resulting death. There are people who need help, and they will not look for it themselves. When someone is on death's door like this, they are not going to come to you. When someone is struggling like this, it is up to YOU to recognize the signs, it is up to to break the tension, it is up to YOU to save that life. There are signs, there are duties YOU need to take on, YOU need to be apart of another living being. DO NOT IGNORE THE SIGNS!
