No specific gear is worn by these dogs except for contact information attached to the dogs' tags. Some companies may have the dogs wearing a vest that is attached to a belt that will go around the child's waist decreasing the chances of he / she running off in public. Brace / Mobility Support Dogs (BMSD): This type of dog provides balancing or counterbalancing for their handler. They may also open and close doors, retrieve dropped items, and help with everyday tasks. Dogs that help with these type of tasks will usually wear a harness that has a handle to be used by their handlers for safety. These dogs must be 23 inches tall and weigh at least 55 pounds. Diabetic Alert Dogs (DADs): alert their handlers of potential danger and deadly blood sugar highs and lows. These dogs are also trained to call 911 through a Special K-9 alert phone if their partner is unconscious. These dogs are required to wear a vest with emergency protocols to be followed if the dog is the first contact point. Depending on that facility's program, they will start training them at puppyhood. Upon graduation from their facility many are matched with their person at the age of two. As the years go on the service dog will eventually retire at the age of eight. This is why these very important animals can be described by three important words: companion, partner, and lifesaver.
