They were not the first, nor the last couple to enter in this manner on this Monday, Dec. 23! "It is a great Christmas Present. We just called each other and said - this is it - the window of opportunity to get married legally before they change their minds!" said another. By 8:45 a.m., there had been nearly 40 obtain licenses and then they hurriedly made their way upstairs to Council Chambers to have Park City's Mayor Dana Williams marry them! Lisa Yoder (who works in the Summit County office as the sustainability director, and Liana Teteberg took their vows with Mayor Williams reading them. They were excited to do it today, but it was not their first time. They were married a few years ago in Washington DC, but they wanted to have it done here in Utah, as they live in Summit Park, and it seemed the "thing to do." Between them they have 11 grandchildren. "...no cold, no rain rain, no loneliness anymore - you are not two persons...one life before you... (and) happiness (will) be your companion..." were some of the words read by Mayor Williams as he married these same sex couples, joining them as "one". There were couples with their children there to witness the marriage of their "mothers" and the mothers were excited to have this done as they feel that it is a protection for their children. It appeared that these children had been awakened early to get to Coalville before the lines were too long. There were many couples who seemed to be confident that this "marriage" between two men or two women would "not" be filed or denied, and that this would be something that would not be "undone" in the future. An update at 12:35 p.m. stated that there were two appeals denied in the federal appellate court and the ruling it appears will hold up. By noon, Mayor Dana Williams had performed at least 28 same sex marriages in Summit County since the doors opened at the courthouse at 8 a.m. Onlookers were surprised at the response at Summit County, and the Courthouse staff were sure that this would be a day-long event as it was! The temporary stay was not executed as it had not been filed! Mayor Dana Williams was honored last week on Dec. 18, as he marked his 12th year as Mayor of Park City has come to a close! The 2002 Olympics are remembered well buy Mayor Williams, as this was the first year he had taken the Oath of Office as their Mayor! This year, 2013, he will retire from a job he has dedicated his "all" to do the best job he could. Mayor Williams has introduced many new programs and policies with the best interests of Park City in mind, always. He is well liked by those he worked with, including other mayors of Summit County. He has made a positive mark in Park City, leaving with a final "suggestion", that of supporting the idea of legalizing "same-sex marriages" in Park City limits. This was announced in the last Park City Council Meeting! Many have had the privilege of enjoying the music rendered at many Deer Valley concerts and at other programs in Summit County by Mayor Dana Williams. His talents are many, and he will be missed by his friends and followers and supporters from the past years as service in Summit County as Mayor of Park City. "I am not sure of the path I will take after leaving office next year - time will tell..." stated Williams as he visited with reporter between performing marriage vows on the 23rd of December for same sex marriages. Dreams do come true for children with "Shop with a Cop" CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor Santa usually came in the big red helicopter, (but snowy conditions prohibited that this year) so he came in a pa- trol car! - but still bringing joy to many boys and girls as he greeted the children! They then all they scurried through the parking lot at Wal-Mart to get inside where it was much warmer for all! Officials and youth had just returned from the Yarrow, where they enjoyed visiting and eating breakfast together to be with their chaperon for the day, an officer representing the Park City Police, Summit County Sheriff's Office, Heber City Police, Wasatch County Sheriff's Office, Utah Highway Patrol, Kamas Police, Utah State Parks, US Forest Service, and Federal agencies. This event is sponsored each year by the Fraternal Order of Police, in partnership with major sponsors: Wal-Mart, The Yarrow Hotel, US Bank, Frontier Bank, Prudential Realtors, Local Businesses, as well as the community at large to help those families in need have an enjoyable Christmas. There were a total of about 60 kids, and over seven different agencies. This event is enjoyed by both the children and families as well as a heart-warming time for those who were their escorts. Many escorts stated that this event was the highlight of their Christmas celebration, and enjoy coming back year after year, donating their time and money to help the children and their families have an experience together they will not soon forget!
