If they have lots of garbage each week, they might have two black garbage bins. But it would have to be a lot of trash — those big black bins hold a bunch. On garbage day, the big garbage truck rumbles up the street, the driver pulls to the side of the bin, pushes a button and fork-lift-like arms snag the bin, lift it up and tip the contents into the enclosed confines of the garbage truck and the garbage is whisked away. If you happen to have a lot of garbage, you try to make it all fit in the bins you have. What happens if you cleaned up the yard over the weekend — trimmed bushes, cut branches, raked up last fall's leaves and pulled up the remnants of last year's garden? You try to force the branches and brambles, the leaves and leftovers, the weeds and the waste into the garbage bin. You pile it high. You stomp on it and smoosh it down. We've gone so far as to prop open the lid, poke some of the branches in, upright around the edges and pile up the garbage bags so they're well above the brim and the branches, then wrap tape around the bags, using the lid as a brace. The trick is to use enough tape to hold the bags on the bin, but not enough to keep the bags from tipping into the trash truck. But I remember when I was growing up. There weren't the big, black bins. There were plastic garbage bags and aluminum, or Rubbermaid, garbage cans that you'd fill and place out on the curb. If you had bunches of branches, you'd stack them in a pile, maybe bunch them in a bundle and tie them with string. You could put just about anything "out for the garbage," and it would be hauled away by the guys who were affectionately known as the "garbage men." The garbage truck would rumble up the street and the driver would, stop in front of the garbage cans or bags at each house. The garbage men, riding on running boards on either side near the back of the truck, would jump of their perch and heave the bags and dump the cans into the open back of the truck. When the truck was full, or at the end of the route, the truck would travel to the City Dump located on the outskirts of town, and dump their load. Of course, you had to use your better judgment as to just how much you could put out on the curb for "the garbage." It just wasn't right to put tons of trash out to be taken away. But if you did have a bunch to throw out, it was easy enough to pile it in a truck and haul it to the dump, or trash pile, as it was also known, yourself. I remember riding in the truck, the dust flying from the road, the acrid smell of burning trash as we got near the dump and an occasional whiff of wet garbage or something decaying in the sun. We'd back up to the edge of a sort of ravine and send our load cascading over the already settled trash. It didn't take long. It was a quick trip from the house to the trash pile and it was easy to unload the truck - just toss it out. And it was a fun trip. If you didn't wander into the icky part, with the wet garbage and how knows what, oh! the treasures you could find!!! I remember my cousins and I would get to ride home in the back of the pick-up, hair flying; eyes stinging from the dust and all of us laughing. And, if we we'd been good and had helped load and unload the truck, we'd get to ride home on the edge of the tail-gate the last few blocks home! I don't think they have city dumps or trash piles anymore. Cities and towns have "Refuse Centers" and you have to have a permit and pay to toss your trash. I've lived in Salt Lake City for almost 30 years and I've never been to the Refuse Center. My boys have never "been to the dump." Nope, gone are the days of trash piles and dumps (which is a good thing). But then, kids don't ride in the back of pickups anymore and they never, ever tailgate! (Which I guess is also probably a good thing.) Share your favorite recipe - we would love to help you by putting it in the Summit County News.
