SCHOOL NEWS SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS PAGE A6 MARCH 4, 2011 South Summit FFA Week RAMMED...Bittersweet State Finals FFA REPORTER: SHANEAL FRYER STUDENT WRITER: ELLI FARMER During the week of Feb. 14-17, the South Summit FFA Chapter celebrated National FFA Week with different activities every day. Monday: On Monday the members of the FFA were invited to a free lunch. They were entertained while enjoying sandwiches from Kamas Food Town, by taking a survey to see how well the members knew their officer team. The member who got the most correct got a super sweet t-shirt made especially for FFA Week. Haley Crystal was the genius who claimed the prize. Tuesday: Tuesday was a unique day to SS FFA because that night the members gathered together in groups and made differing baskets to be sold at the annual bake sale on Wednesday. An officer was in charge of one of 5 baskets. The themes of the baskets were: Chocolate Lovers, Go Fish, Date Night, Movie Night, and FFA. This was also a time for the members to decorate baked goods for the bake sale also. Wednesday: The annual FFA Bake Sale took a little different approach than in past years. The auction was held during school so the South Summit student body could participate. The auctioneer was a student from Union High School- Joe Frost. Companies from around the Kamas Valley also attended and helped support the FFA organization by biding and buying items. The auction went very successfully with the FFA making over $2200 from the donations of the businesses and students. Thursday: Members enjoyed a "Game Night" on Thursday. Wii games, X-box, Twister, and other various games were played. What do you get when to have a clear plate with peanut butter spread on both sides? One funny game! The pair that was able to lick the peanut butter off the quickest was yours truly and my partner Travis Cann. Afterwards pairs were made and one was blindfolded and had to put make up on the other. When everyone got cleaned off the real fun began. While Mario Cart was being played on the Wii in the Ag Room, Country Music Rock Band was going on in the hallway on the Xbox. Even though Mario Cart was a hit, after several rounds it was time for a change. It was time to break out Just Dance 2! State FFA Sentinel Kyle Neisporek was in attendance and thoroughly kicking butt until Elvis's Viva Las Vegas was played. McKena Woolstenhulme then broke out of her shell and whooped some butt! The winners of the night were Haley Crystal for her domination at Mario Cart, and Matthew Thompson for his amazing vocals in Rock Band. They were presented with super cool South Summit FFA ball caps. Over all the night was fun and members won't forget it! Friday: FFA spirit day was celebrated by inviting the whole school to wear as much Blue and Gold as possible. The student body was also invited to search for three FFA spirit sticks made by FFA officers Jordan Page, Cache Bisel, and Lee Marchant. Hidden throughout the school at various times of the day, the students had no problem finding the first two sticks, however the last stick (hidden in the wrestling room) was a bit tricky. Those that found the spirit sticks received more of the cool FFA week t-shirts. All-in-all the South Summit FFA week was a huge success and everyone who participated had a great time. South Summit girls and boys chosen for Academic All-State Team = -• . The South Summit Wildcats have had an amazing boys basketball season this year, a season that took them all the way to the State Finals in 2A. In the Semi-Finals the Cats took revenge for their second place football title when they killed San Juan, the football champs. The South Summit students that came down to support their Wildcats couldn't have been happier because once again South Summit was headed to the State Finals. At the state game the whole Kamas Valley, as well as some super seniors, showed up to cheer the Wildcats on as they played in the final game for the 2010 - 2011 basketball season. Students went to Wal-Mart and bought tons of green glow sticks, funny green hats, and painted their faces for the game. With the lights out and spotlights whirling around, the two teams, South Summit and South Sevier, were introduced to the crowd and the fans on the South Summit side of the gym were glowing green. Soon enough the clock was ticking and South Summit had the first points on the board. Throughout the first quarter the two teams battled to be have the winning score. The first quarter ended and South Summit still had the lead. As the second quarter started, South Sevier took control holding the Wildcats scoreless. Halftime came and went and it was back to the game. The Cats came back fighting and continued to approach South Sevier's score, but never quit reached the mark. Heading into the fourth quarter everyone was hoping that the team could pull off the miracle game like last season. Unfortunately, the Cats were Rammed. When the game was over the Cats had lost by five points 37-42. Many people had bittersweet feelings when South Summit claimed their second place trophy. No one should be upset about the outcome of the game because overall the Wildcats did so much more right then they did wrong. First, they beat San Juan by more points in basketball then they beat the Cats by in State Football. Second they made it to the State Final game two years in a row, a feat that hasn't been accomplished in the past forty years. And lastly, they always came back. When there was a seemingly huge gap in the scores they kept fighting till the end, making it a great ball game to watch. The seniors Trevor Rydalch, Robbie Rydalch, Levi Thompson, Jordan Page, and Parker Anderson played a great state game this year and are going to be incredibly missed next year. Thanks for a great season Wildcats! Better than expected STUDENT WRITER: EMILY DUESER CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor ...An honor earned by students with a lot of hard work and dedication going into it. As Jerre Holmes, NSHS Principal and on the Academic Allstate staff stated, "remember...this is 4 years of hard work roll into one!" Boys Deseret News 2A Academic All-State Teams for 2010 a-2011 from Summit County are both from South Summit High School. The team this year has an academic GPA of 3.942. The girls' representative is Paige Peterson from South Summit. The boys' representative is Trevor Rydalch. Congratulations to these fine young people! The South Summit Girls Basketball team shattered applied expectations as they entered the 2010-2011 State Basketball Tournament in Richfield this past weekend. The girls surpassed their first goal when they defeated the Gunnison Bulldogs 45-26, winning their first playoff game in several years. With an unmatched mix of determination and talent, the Ladycats pulled off the upset on Thursday night by prevailing over North Sevier 42-35. Attributing to this win was the magnitude of each player's ability to step up at different times to seize the chance at winning the state title. However, to obtain this aspiration, the team had to shut down the explosive Enterprise Wolves the following day. The Ladycats stuck with the fast paced strategy of the Wolves, but were unable to match their size and experience. In the end, they lost 4323 to Enterprise High School, who eventually became the 2011 2A State Champs. Without being deterred by this lost, the Ladycats came back and battled Kanab High School for third and fourth place. The two teams fought valiantly but the Kanab Cowboys came out on top 45-37. The teams only senior, Paige Peterson, received a prestigious recognition for being inducted in the 2011 2A Academic All-State Team. Congratulations on your amazing season girls!
