Neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease often disrupt sleep. The new findings are some of the first indications that sleep loss could play a role in the genesis of such disorders. Here are 15 ways to get a better nights sleep. 1.Exercise twenty to thirty minutes a day. Experiments show the more physical exercise an individual does, the more REM sleep they will have. But avoid exercising in the late evening as this can increase metabolism and may inhabit sleep. 2. Avoid meat for supper. Meat contains amino acids or proteins which, when digested, can help one to stay alert. However, meat can take 45 hours to digest, so if you eat at 6:00 p.m., these proteins may begin to increase alertness at the precise time you want to go to sleep. 3.Eat foods high in tryptophan earlier in the day like tofu, flax or pumpkin seeds, gluten flour, almonds, walnuts, soybeans, black-eyed peas, brown rice, halibut, mackerel or turkey. The following foods are also said to promote melatonin — oats, corn, brown rice, ginger, tomatoes, bananas, and barley. 4. Relax before going to bed, take a warm bath or shower or read to ease into a sleep routine. 5.If you have a tendency to worry at night set anxieties and worries aside as you go to bed — you may try writing these down on paper to release them from your mind. 6. See a bright light first thing in the morning; and if you have trouble waking up in the middle of the night it's recommended that you get some natural bright light during the day. Light helps rebalance circadian rhythms to overcome insomnia. 7.If you are having trouble going to sleep at night, stay busy so as to avoid sleep during the day. 8. Eat and go to bed at the same time each night 9. Use soothing music, reading, and other pre-sleep rituals like prayer in the evening before you go to bed. 10.Control your room temperature. Keep it comfortable, a bit on the cool side, having the windows open so you get a cool breeze may also help. 11.Make sure your room is dark at night. Turn off nay radio or other night lights. 12.Increase your calcium, magnesium, and B-vitamin intake, as your body needs these nutrients to relax. 13.Do not drink coffee or other stimulants including caffeinated drinks or even chocolate before bed as caffeine can inhabit melatonin production for sleep. 14.Don't go to bed hungry but don't go to bed on a full stomach either.
