STUDENT WRITER: TIANA FAAVALE Recently, our seventh and eighth graders of North Summit participated in a program called "Reality Town." The students applied for jobs that fit their grade point average, and were given a pamphlet of real life scenarios, having a non working spouse with three kids for example. We were also given a fake check book, in order to pay for insurance and a house and other necessities. We were instructed to go to the middle school gym and go to each table in the gym. There were many tables to participate in. For example I went to buy car insurance first, then I went to buy and car, house, and dental insurance. After purchasing everything needed in order to have a well-balanced life, some students were "in debt" and needed to buy a smaller house, buy cheaper food, or downsize. I thought this was a good experience and it taught everyone how important it is too balance out your life, and that sometimes you need to make sacrifices. I hope that every student is able to participate in this fun and educational activity. Note: The North Summit Middle School Administration and staff would like to thank the teachers, volunteers, including professionals, high school students and counselors for their participation in this exercise. They all hope that the students will benefit from their experiences in the up-coming real-life choices as they prepare for their education. They also felt that the program was a great success.
