Eating right is basic to good health. Sometimes the person in your care, may not live with you, or you may still be working, and find it very difficult to provide all the meals they need. The Older American Act has provided in-home and community meals for those elderly persons that need them. The in-home meals are called Meals on Wheels while the communal meals have been provided for at the Senior Centers. The main criteria for both the meals is that the recipient must be 60 or over. In addition, to qualify for the home deliver meals, they must be home bound. In years past, there has been sufficient funding. The Federal Government, local governments, and Departments of Aging, along with the $2.25-$2.50 suggested donations by recipients has been able to provide these meals. However, with the tightening of the government budgets, Mountainland Department of Aging has also reached out to the public for more donations from community members and groups as well as from the care receiver’s families. Others who would like to participate either with a cash donation or as a volunteer are encouraged to contact either Mountainland Department of Aging at 801-229-3805 or Linda Morrison at (435) 7835708. Many people as they age, lose their appetite. This can be a problem if they are loosing weight and need the extra calories. Here are some tips to get extra calories when the appetite is poor; Offer more food at the time of day when the person is most hungry, give smaller, more frequent meals, provide a nourishing snacks like milk or fruit shakes, add fat by using butter, margarine, or olive oil on foods, add nonfat dry-mild powder to yogurt, mashed potatoes, gravy, and sauces, pureed baby foods may be helpful, or use powdered instant breakfasts in milk. As with other activities of daily living, people with dementia need more help with eating. Their ability to make appropriate food choices, use utensils correctly, chew and swallow food, and simply sit at the table, changes over the course of the illness. Allow plenty of time for each meal, stay relaxed and offer encouragement. It may be helpful to serve only one course at a time to ensure they do not eat dessert first. People with dementia seem to have a sweet tooth, so use these food items as an encouragement to finish their meal. If a person refuses to eat, don’t force eating. Instead, provide a drink and return a little later and try again. Be aware that people who pace a great deal use lots of calories and may need to have several snacks during the day to keep their weight up. Don’t forget the fluids, especially water. Our natural sense of thirst diminishes with age. Some drugs also dry out the body. It is important to drink water “by he clock,” not unlike you would schedule crucial medications. This allows better absorption of nutrients from foods as well as medications, and reduces the risk of dehydration. It also helps with constipation and urinary tract infections. Remember to check with the doctor before starting any special diets, especially for a person with a swallowing impairment. If diabetes is an issue, ask your doctor for an eating plan. The doctor, or pharmacist, or registered dietitian will know what the person in your care can eat. Your physician can order a registered nurse to come in and give you some training through the Medicare program. People on coumadin, a blood thinner, should avoid some foods. Local hospitals usually have a Nutritionist or Dietician on staff.
