Show eft February 18, 2005 The Summit County Bee Page A7 QlfaJi Shakespearean festival*Jo Present CPfay"JlSout'JKouie-JKaJting (anJCflSou/ Gife) Every year in January the Sundance Film Festival captures the imaginations of much of the world as directors, actors, writers and film buffs gather in Utah. Attending the festival or even watching news coverage on television offers all of us a bit of insight into moviemaking and the people surrounding it—especially the glamour and the stars. In contrast, this summer in south- ern Utah, Utah Shakespearean Festival patrons will get another view of the film-making industry (and of life) at the stage production of Stones in His Pockets, featuring a story about the local extras and various hangers-on surrounding a movie shoot in rural Ireland. Marie Jones's tragicomedy. Stones in His Pockets, provides a close-up look at how life changes, probably forever, in a small Irish village when Redstone 8 Cinemas Klmball Junction, Park City 14351515-0221 wvnM.metrorockymoumaln.com Movies & Times for Fri., Feb. 18th itch. - PG-13 On 2 Screens Constantine - R 1:30, 2:30, 4:O5, 6:OS, 2:10,4:40,7:15,9:50 6:45, 7:3O, 9:15, 1O:OO Son of Mask - PG Finding Neverland - PG 2:O6, 4:2O, 6;4O, 8:50 2:00,4:15,7:10,9:30 Being J u l i a - R Million Dollar Baby - PG-13: 1:50,4:45,7:25,10:15 l:4O, 4:OO, 6:B0, 9:OO Sideways - R, 2:2O, 4:5Q, 7:36, 1O:1Q THIS WEEK? Volleyball Leagues a Hollywood film crew descends upon it. It will play four times a week in the Randall L. Jones Theatre from June 23 to Sept. 3. A tour-de-forcc for two actors who must instantly dart in and out of ail the fifteen parts in the play. Stones in His Pockets promises to be unlike anything Festival audiences have seen before. With a change from an Irish brogue to a Scottish or English dialect, with the doffing of a hat or a new facial expression, the actor instantly changes from a local hired as a extra to the assistant director to even the female star of the movie! In the process, these characters magically lead us through the frustrations, the humor and the tragedy that make up this poignant play. Festival favorites, David Ivers and Brian Vaughn, good friends off the set, have been cast in what are perhaps the most challenging roles of their careers. "This play represents a great theatrical event about the human condition," said Vaughn. "I'm sure that for both David and myself this will be a once in a lifetime experience. ALCOHOLISM, DRUG ADDICTION? / Recovery groups are part of the problem. / Quit on your own, and make it stick! "Certainly, doing these parts will be a good deal more of a challenge than usual," "Stones in His Pockets exposes different cultural norms," added Ivers. "I'm happy that we're able to take a new contemporary theatrical direction with shows like this one and last year's The Spitfire Grill. "I look forward to working with my good friend, Brian. I'm glad he has to play the woman, though." Festival veteran director J.R. Sullivan added a few observations of his own: "The comedy is random and sometimes hysterical. "This is a film shoot, after all, bedeviled by its own shooting schedule, money problems, the weather and human nature. "Add to this a cliche-ridden, wholly predictable Hollywood script, and all theingredients are in place. What then astonishes is the human tale that emerges." Stones in His Pockets is one of six plays being presented this summer in Cedar City. Other titles include Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Love's Labour's Lost, Doctor Faustus and Camelot. From Sept. 23 to Oct. 29, three additional plays will be offered: All's Well that Ends Well; The Foreigner and Pippin. Tickets for these productions arenow available by calling 1800PLAYTIX or online at www.bard.org. The Tony Award-winning Festival is hosted on the campus of Southern Utah University and is committed to entertain, enrich and educate audiences through professional productions of Shakespeare and other master dramatists.
