Show October 29, 2004 The Summit County Bee North Summit Senior Citizens With the majority of the Seniors in the age bracket of late 60's to late 80's and a few pushing into the 90's, we-^et reminded about forgetting where we put things, forgetting names, forgetting dates and just generally forgetfulness which we are all guilty of once in awhile, but we, hopefully, retain a little wisdom along the way. We were wise enough to go the Summit County Health Center for our flu shot on Oct. 21. We all passed age limit for high risk and some have other health problems which up us even at a higher risk. We hope this will keep us from getting the flu this winter. Maybe everyone can practice good hygiene by washing our hands frequently and covering our mouths when coughing and sneezing and staying home if sick. We certainly used wisdom when twenty four of us went by bus to the Eccles auditorium in Park city to hear 'The President's Own" United States Marine Band on Oct. 20. It was a wonderful performance and everyone enjoyed the music, giving the band standing ovations several times. There were soloists including a clarinet player who was outstanding and a baritone singer doing lovely Irish songs. We couldn't keep our toes from tapping with the John Philip Sousa marches and each rousing melody of all the armed forces. Many in the crowd stood tall and proud as their particular number represented them. It was a stirring entertainment and we look forward to more Senior excursions. As I write this article, we are looking forward to a pot-luck dinner on Thursday, Oct. 28, at 5 p.m.. with a movie and maybe an early game of canasta. We always have plenty of good food and, as some say, "made by the best cooks in the county." We like to have pot-luck occasionally at least until the weather is more than we can handle at night. This month has been under the direction of Board member Roy Bolinder with Coalville Health Center 82 North 50 East Coalville, UT 435-336-4403 9-5 M-F. 9-12 Sal. his good wife Kathleen's help. Kathleen recently had hip surgery on both hips and she look so good and gets around so well. I don't know her doctor, but she should be his poster patient for doing so well. I'm sure Kathleen should take credit too for trying to be healthy and following the doctor's orders. Our Board members for 2004 have been Doris Hardin, Pat Treen, Harold Donaldson, Louise B. Judd, Roy Bolinder and our newest member, Charles (Chuck) Grower. The Vice President is Keith Shaw and President Shirley Phelps. We will soon have elections and. if any of the Senior Citizen members would like their name on the ballot, they need only to let one of the Board members know. The election will be in December so a good start can be made at the last board meeting for this year. Time to be announced later as our usual board meeting is the last Friday of the month. However, that Friday is New Year's Eve and the one before is Christmas Eve, so we will decide in November what to do. Louise Wallace is the Seniors Secretary as well as the Treasurer and the regular writer for The Bee. I can't even start to tell you what a big job this is even for small organization. We are not only working with Summit County but also with Mountainlands and the Federal Government. You wouldn't believe all the paper work that must be done. When they ask for duplicate reports with a report stating you have sent in your report, it gets a little too much. But Louise has been faithfully doing this tor fourteen years without much help. However, I am doing a poor job as Louise had a asthma attack Oct. 19 and was in the McKay-Dee Hospital for three days and, as I write this, is still recuperating at home. I know Rose, being the caring person she is, is taking good care of Louise and helping at home with some of the Senior business, but we certainly miss Louise at club and all her work. Rose had carpel-tunnel surgery on her hand also on Oct. 19, but tells me she is fine. We have others in our club thai have health problems, also. We hope you can be well soon and back with us; also those that are grieving or troubled in any way. We miss you all when you are not with us. We do have one extremely lucky person in our club. Cindy McGeehee, who is a future member in waiting and a caretaker for member George Perkins from Park City. Cindy won a $1,000 check from Zion's Bank in their Extreme Loan Event fall contest from Utah and Idaho residences. Coalville Zion Bank was one of the sponsors and it was a surprise to Cindy. I'm sure it is too late to hit Cindy up for a loan as she is remodeling her home and probably put the money into some worthy project. Drive by her home in Hoytsville and note the new addition to her home and the siding and rock work. We are happy for her. Connie Linford bought us pamphlets for the winter heat program starting in November. This winter cold weather kind of caught us by surprise after the nice warm weather. But we knew it was coming probably sooner than later and it will pass and then we can look forward to spring. Gen Geary brought in this lillle saying as one of the greatest things about getting older. You might have to read it more than once to really appreciate it. "It has been said that there is no fool like an old fool, except ;i young fool. But the young fool has first to grow up to be an old fool 10 realize what a damn fool he was when he was a young fool" —1 larold Macmillan. Communities nationwide witness tragic home lire deaths each year. An average of three children per day die in home IIres and 80 percent of those occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Nonworking smoke alarms rob residents of the protective benefits home fire safety devices were designed to provide. The most commonly cited cause of non-working smoke alarms: worn or missing batteries. Changing smoke alarm batteries at least once a year is one of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce these tragic deaths and injuries. In fact, working smoke alarms nearly cut in half the risk of dying in a home fire. Additionally, the International Association of Fire Chiefs recommends replacing your smoke alarms every 10 years. "The peak time for home fire fatalities is between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. when most families arc sleeping," says Assistant Chief and Fire Marshal Scott W. Adams. "Smoke alarm maintenance is a simple, effective way to reduce home fire deaths. Children and senior citizens are most at risk, and a working smoke alarm can give them the extra seconds they need to get out safely." The Park City Fire District is offering residents of the Park City Fire Service District batteries to Qo Classifieds!
