Show Opinions Page 2 The Gunnison Valley Gazette I'm Just Saying... by JANIS SAURIC March is Irish American Month which was designated by Congress in 1995. Well, course it is. We have long celebrated St. Patrick's Day on March 17. It is held in honor of Saint Patrick, the missionary who brought Christianity to the Irish people in the 400's A.D. It is a day of shamrocks, a day to wear green and to pinch those who don't, a day to spout Irish limericks and blessings, and a day to eat corned beef and cabbage. It is a day for celebration in elementary school, but a day sometimes ignored by adults — at least those of us who don't enjoy an Irish beer. March is also National Red Cross Month. Who can measure the good that organization has done since its founding in 1881 by Clara Barton and a circle of her acquaintances. At the military's request during World War II the Red Cross initiated a national blood program that collected 13.3 million pints of blood for use by the armed forces. That program is still functioning today. We can feel safe making a donation to the Red Cross to help with their relief efforts around the world, their support of the U.S. military and their families, their blood collection, their health and safety education, and their help for people affected by disasters in America. It feels good to be a part of a humani- tarian effort in some way. Johnny Appleseed Day is March 11. This day honors one of America's great legends. He was a real person who was captivated by the western American movement across the continent. He was a nurseryman who started out planting trees in western New York and Pennsylvania. As he travelled west, he planted apple trees along the way, and sold trees to settlers. With every apple tree that was planted the legend grew. He led a simple life and wanted little. There is a real lesson there. Celebrate today with an apple rich menu. Include fresh apples for snacks, and some applesauce or apple pie for dessert. And, make plans to plant an apple tree. March 21 is Fragrance Day. Don't put up a stink about it. The olfactory nerves in your nose will enjoy this great smelling day. Perfumes have been in use for hundreds of years. In ancient days they were used to hide body odors. Today our daily shower eliminates that need. But, we still like the smell and attraction of perfume. Celebrate today by buying some perfume or cologne for yourself, or as a gift for someone. It's a great excuse to try a new scent. As I write about celebrations during the year I tried to decide whether to include Easter in March or April. After research, I'm as confused as ever. It can be in either of the two months because it falls on the Sunday immediately following the first astronomical full moon after the vernal equinox which is March 21. This is the day on which the length of daylight equals the length of darkness as the days are lengthening into spring. So Easter is the first Sunday after the full moon of that equinox. This full moon is called the Paschal Full Moon. If you want to understand this better you'll have to do your own research. I just know that using this formula Easter can fall between March 22 and April 25, so we'll talk about it in April. Whew! There are other days for celebration during March. Peanut Butter Lovers' Day is March 1. Middle Name Pride Day is March 10. My sisters, my daughters and I don't have one so we won't be celebrating that day, but you might. Learn About Butterflies Day is March 14. This is a day I can get into. I have been telling my daughter for years that in the next life I want to be a butterfly since they seem to have such carefree lives. I'm just kidding, I think Did you know that butterfly wings are transparent, butterflies taste with their feet, they live on an all liquid diet, they drink from mud puddles and they can't fly when they are cold? Celebrate! You know we can usually find what we are looking for. If it is finding a reason to celebrate this magnificent life, we'll find that. I hope you always keep your eyes open and find joy in living! Happy March. Into atr the World Hermana BrieAnn Peterson is serving in the Gresham, Oregon area of the Vancouver Washington Mission.
