Show Sports The Wednesday, September 17, 2014 Valley Gazette Homecoming heartbreak for the Bulldogs by ANDY HILL Despite starting strong and having multiple opportunities at the end of the game, the Gunnison Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker in their Homecoming game 40-27 to a very physical Layton Christian Eagles team. "It was a tough game," stated head coach Trent Halliday on the loss. "I felt like we were evenly matched with them. It's disappointing to lose a game like that, but our kids fought hard and we will learn from it." Early on it was Gunnison who came to play, moving the ball with ease and taking a quick 12-0 lead on a 9 yard pass from Hunter Whitney to Zach Christensen followed right up by an incredible 70 yard catch and scamper by Jordan Sorensen. But in the second quarter, the momentum shifted, and it was all Layton Christian. Led by Justin Banks, who scored four times on the night, the Eagles pounded in three unanswered scores to take a 20-12 lead. "Defensively we played well," said Halliday, "but struggled tackling at times, letting them move the ball on us." Right before halftime, with the clock quickly running down, Gunnison was able to score again, this time on a 15 yard toss to Conner Caldwell from Hunter Whitney. In third quarter it was clear that this was a game that was going to come down to execution and heart. Both teams were able to score in the quarter; Layton Christian on a 20 yard run from Justin Banks, and Gunnison on a 50 yard pass from Hunter Whitney to Zach Christensen. Neither team was able to convert extra point attempts, which set up for an incredible finish as the third quarter ended with Layton Christian still holding on to a slim lead at 28-26. After a quick score by the Eagles in the fourth quarter pushed the score to 33-27, the Bulldogs were able to respond, adding a 13 yard field goal by Chad Ellet and trimming the lead to a three point game. And then things got exciting. With under 2:00 to go in the game, it looked like the Eagles were going to be able to run out the clock and secure the win, when the improbable happened. On third down and short, Gunnison's defense was able to force a fumble and suddenly give them some desperately needed hope. With the crowd on its feet, and time ticking away, Gunnison's hopes were dashed as quickly as they had come as Layton Christian's Garret Elmy intercepted the first pass from scrimmage and rumbled for a 55 yard score. After added the extra point, the Eagles took a 40-27 lead, which they would not relinquish. Hunter Whitney led the Bulldogs offensively, throwing for 345 yards and four touchdowns to three different receivers, with Zach Christensen hauling in four of them for 71 yards and two of the scores. Jordan Sorensen, Reece Reynolds, and McKade Cox headed up a solid defensive effort. Gunnison will now gear up for a three game stretch on the road, facing American Leadership, South Summit, and Millard before returning again home on October 10th, which will be their last home game against San Juan. Wildcats and Templars top Lady Bulldogs by MITCH PETERSON The GVHS girls soccer team kicked off their Central Region schedule last week with a couple of losses. It started with a game against South Summit in Kamas last Tuesday, September 9th. The Lady Cats jumped out to an early lead on their way to a 7-0 win, the Bulldogs first loss of the year. Two days later, the Manti Lady Templars defeated the Bulldogs 8-0 in Gunnison. Against Manti, the Lady Bulldogs fell behind 4-0 in the first few minutes of the game and trailed 6-0 at halftime. But the second half was much better as Gunnison's defense kept Manti's high-powered offense contained most of the time while the Bulldog midfielders and forwards created some scoring chances of their own. Page 5 The Gunnison golf team took fourth place at last week's regular season region match at East Bay Golf Course in Provo. The Bulldogs, and the rest of the 2A teams, started playing about two hours later than expected, due to a scheduling conflict at the course. It affected all the teams and players. Plus, East Bay is a tough test for any golfer. "There is water on nearly every hole," said Gunnison head coach Jordan Van Onnan. "That proved to be a challenge for our players. We took fourth place overall again, but we're looking forward to our match at Palisade this week." This week's region match at Palisade on Wednesday, September 17th, starts at 11:30 am, with the Bulldogs hosting. At East Bay last week, Matt Carlisle led the Bulldogs with a 111, while Gage Mogle shot 113; Payton Judy 114; Kyle Petersen 118; Carson Hansen 121; and Dayton Johnson 128. Carlisle just took up the sport of golf last year as a freshman. Now in his sophomore year, he's improved his game to the point that he fired the team's best score during last week's match at East Bay. "That's unusual for me," Carlisle said. He was happy with his round, despite the delayed start and the conditions. "I played the front nine pretty good," Carlisle said. "There's a lot of water at East Bay, and it rained before we played, so that made it even more difficult. We didn't do as good as a team but we still took fourth." Carlisle credits a couple of things for his improved play. "My driving is pretty good, and my putting helps me out," he said. But, as every golfer knows, there's always something to work on. "I'm trying to get my irons more consistent," he said. Overall, Carlisle and his teammates are enjoying the season. "We're having a good time and we're looking forward to the match at Palisade this week," Carlisle said. "Since it's our home course and we play it a lot, we're hoping for good scores." It's all in preparation for the state qualifying match coming up later this year, at the same East Bay course the team played last week. "We're trying to meet our goal of qualifying for the state tournament this year," Carlisle said. "And we'll have everybody back next year, so we should be even better." In addition to golf, Carlisle stays busy with other school activities. He's currently the manager for the Bulldog volleyball team and also in the school band. Carlisle also plays basketball and tennis for GVHS. After this week's match at Palisade, the Bulldogs and the rest of the region will be at Mt. View Golf Course in West Jordan next Wednesday, the 24th, for a regular season match, hosted by Summit Academy. After that, the teams will gather at East Bay for the state qualifying tournament on October 1st.
