Show Thursday, November 24, 2011 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Lady Bulldogs ready for season by MITCH PETERSON The Gunnison Lady Bulldog basketball team is hard at work, and the players and coaches are ready for some game action. The Bulldogs open the 2011-2012 season on the road next Tuesday, November 29th, against the Piute Lady Thunderbirds in Junction. The home opener is Tuesday, December 6th, when they host the Milford Lady Tigers. After that, the Bulldogs will play in a tournament in Kanab on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9th and 10th. The non-region schedule also includes games against Waterford, South Sevier, Beaver, Maeser Prep, Rowland Hall, South Summit, and North Summit. The first region game is scheduled for Tuesday, January 10th, against North Sevier. The Bulldogs compete at the 2A level, which features a total of 20 teams divided into four regions. Beaver, Enterprise, Kanab, Millard, and Parowan make up Region 13, while Region 14 consists of Maeser Prep (Lindon), North Summit (Coalville), Rowland Hall (Salt Lake City), South Summit (Kamas), and Waterford (Sandy). Region 15 includes Emery (Castle Dale), Grand County (Moab), Richfield, San Juan (Blanding), and South Sevier (Monroe). Gunnison will battle for the Region 16 crown All-State Golf Mason Powell, a sophomore at Gunnison Valley High School, was selected by the Utah Section of the PGA Board of Directors as a 2011-2012 First Team All-State golf member. Mason is the son of Trevor and Angie Powell of Gunnison. The Bulldogs first game is next Tuesday against Piute in Junction. against American Leadership Academy (Spanish Fork), Manti, North Sevier (Salina), and Wasatch Academy (Mt. Pleasant). The Deseret News released their first statewide 2A girls basketball poll this week. Richfield gets the top ranking, with Enterprise, Emery, Beaver, and Kanab rounding out the top five. The Enterprise Wolves defeated the Beaver Beavers in last year's 2A title game. Your 2011-12 Gunnison Lady Bulldog basketball team features seniors Sara Brown, Jeslie Camp, and Kayli Frandsen; juniors Kaylee Broderick, Chansey Caldwell, and BrieAnn Peterson; sophomores Madee Christenson, Paula Ferracini, Millie Hammond, Macady Hatch, Tyra Herrera, Jennie Otten, Braylie Peterson, and Sadee Sorensen; and freshmen Danielle Boore, Rebekah Hosteenez, Ciara Sly, Alexandra Stafford, and Tae ' lor Thompson. The team selected senior Sara Brown and junior Chansey Caldwell as captains. Head coach Jordan Stewart is back for his third year at the helm, and he's assisted once again by Mindy Coates and Cami Goble. GVMS students participate in Hoop Shoot Two hundred and twenty Gunnison Valley Middle School students participated in this year's annual Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw contest. The six winners will move on and represent GVMS at the district hoop shoot contest held in Monroe on December 3rd. District winners can advance to state, region and then to the national competition. The national champions are enshrined into the basketball hall of fame. Over 3 million students participate in the event nation-wide every year. This year's winners from GVMS are Kyler White and Makena Mogle as the 12-13 year-old champions and Drayson Pickett and Abby Smith as the 12-13 year-old runners-up. Braydon May and Harley Stratton are the 10-11 year-old champions. Congratulations to these athletes and good luck to them at the district level. His lesson, entitled "Credit: What is it and are YOU Worthy?" reinforced to students the importance of effective money management and the potential for credit abuse. A semester of general financial literacy has been a required class for all Utah public high school students for the past five years.
