Show Page 2 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Letters to the editor... THANKS TO THE SPECIAL SERVICE DISTRICT BOARD I wish to thank the members of the Axtell Community Special Service District Board who, on Friday September 25th, repaired the broken pipe in our culinary water system. They tried unsuccessfully to hire a contractor to come to Axtell, and when no one would come they did the work themselves. Travis Blackburn, Tyler Blackburn, and Glen Goff worked through the day and well into the night to get water back on for the houses on Sunflower Lane. Jerry Roberts PONYO, A MUST SEE FOR ALL MOVIE-GO’ERS Last year, this luscious animated film won every conceivable Asian award. This year, Disney/Pixar released the English language version, with such superstars as Liam Neeson, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, The story resembles Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, but the magic goes deeper. Ponyo is a goldfish from the bottom of the sea, who desperately wants to become a girl. Five-year-old Sosuke finds her stuck in a jar that has washed up on the beach. These children’s voices belong to Noah Cyrus, the younger sister of Miley Cyrus, and Frankie Jonas, a younger brother of the performing Jonas Brothers. The fondness these two magical characters share definitely warms your heart. Unlike Pixar productions, with computer-generated animation, Ponyo is entirely hand-drawn, one individual frame at a time. The detail, the flow, the colors pull you in to a world of magic and fantasy. A tsunami created by Ponyo’s father to sweep her back into the sea becomes a herd of sea monsters snapping at the shore like hungry wolves. The story has everything to feel good about: kindness and love, dedication and loyalty, fear overcome by courage, and joy emerging from neardisaster. Cloris Leachman, Lily Tomlin and Betty White, as three old women from the nursing home where Sosuke’s mother works, brilliantly trade their frustrations at growing old for the bliss of a new lease on life. Advertised as a children’s movie, Ponyo offers great enjoyment for adults as well. In fact, whole families can learn lessons about caring for each other, their neighbors, and their community. The movie starts Friday at the Casino Star Theatre. Thursday, October 1, 2009 Smith Bros. to perform at Star “High-energy fun in four-part harmony!” boasts the Smith Bros. Dirt Band.
