Show eureka man has trying experience on ocean trip 0 A recent issue of the telegram published the following story regard ing the adventures of dr fred franke who was a member of the carnegie scientific expedition which started for the south sea islands but turned back when their ship was badly damaged in a tropical storm when dr franke reached new york he got in telegraphic touch with his family in eureka and learned ot of the death of hia his father coming west tor for the funeral he is undecided cheth er or or not to join the expedition again the story as published in the salt lake paper Is as follows the lure of adventure and a de termination to accomplish a stupendous scientific undertaking tor for the good of humanity are incidents for a handful of men to brave all the seas of the world in a sailing boat with a mast which stands feet above water and whose only engine Is made of brass and can be run tor for only an hour at a time the men come from the carnegie washington institute which since 1909 has been engaged in making a magnetic survey of the world and the vessel recently reached an east ern port upon returning from a sur vey of seas along the east coast of south america and the he west coast of africa according to dr fred franke ship physic ia n who is at home in eureka on a leave of ab since coming west to attend the tun fun eral of his father G A franke the whole thing came about when andrew carnegie one of the wolard s richest men made his proposition several years ago to give his money to the world and declared that he would listen to all proposals tor for plans to benefit humanity dr L A bower noted scientific student and lecturer proposed that a geodetic survey be made of the world in order that all maps might be made more accurate and that in formation concerning the depth of the ocean at seaports the analysis of the water a survey of atmosphere atmos pher ic conditions and other valuable facts might be obtained As a re suit sult of the interview 22 in steel bonds were deposited in a fund for the establishment of the carne gle washington institution and dr bower was made head of the depart ment of magnetism T nonmagnetic ship was specially constructed without the use of a particle of steel or any other mag betle substance not even a safety pin can go aboard unless it Is made of brass food tor for the crew of thirty men and eight or ten scientific ex ports aboard Is cooked on a large brass stove and even the sailors knives are of brass this is why the ship Is a sailing vessel tor for the brass engine expands when it is heated and can there tore fore be run for only an hour at a time no steel rigging can be used and only the strongest hemp fibre hoists and lowers the sails the hemp hawser on the anchor Is eleven inches in diameter no wireless ap can be carried on the little ship to signal tor for help in case of distress we were in a tropical storm on our last voyage explained dr franke with our rudder torn away and the whole outlook was pretty black tor for us but finally a ship passed us and with the signal code we were able to get a wireless mes sage from the latter which caused a tug to be sent to rescue us the tug brought us into dry dock in the panama canal region but suppose you were in mid ocean without a rudder and with no vessel within a thousand mils he was asked what then dr franke smiled that s part of the game we d just wait that s all and think about our insurance money there Is noth ing else we could do dr franke graduated from the university of utah in 1918 and from the george washington university in 1920 he served his internship at the university hospital and got his appointment less than a year ago to the unique ship of the carnegie washington institution he Is mar ried and haa has a little girl 3 years of age the personnel ot of the ship changes he said principally when the men get married no women are allowed on the ship except as visitors when it Is in port but there Is a lure to the thing that makes the men love it and stay with it in spite of the hazards no one knows the whereabouts of the ship except headquarters at washington and all mall mail must go through there dr franke does not himself know there the ship is at present and may have to pick it up at some european port when his leave of absente is over lie he expects that the next voyage will be made in the mediterranean and the aarl abic |
