Bulldog freshman Sarah Nilsson scored five goals last week, including a first-half hat trick against North Sevier, as the Bulldogs beat the Wolves and the Richfield Wildcats by identical 3-2 scores. Megan Jensen got both wins in goal. The Bulldogs entered the final week knowing they’d need at least one win to make the playoffs. They decided to take care of business quickly with three first half goals on North Sevier in Salina last Tuesday, October 7th. Then the Bulldogs withstood three second-half North Seveir penalty kicks and some heavy Wolves pressure to win the match 3-2, clinching 6th place in the Region 12 race in the process. The Bulldogs didn’t have that must-win pressure for the final match at home against Richfield last Thursday, but they faced a Wildcat team still battling for a playoff spot. The Wildcats had leads of 1- be available. The skilled rehabilitation services provided at the center will include private isolation rooms with private baths. When you add in the fact that the 0 and 2-1 but the Bulldogs came back each time, tying it at 2-2 in the last minute, then winning it 3-2 in the second overtime. Richfield made the playoffs anyway when North Sevier lost their final match to Manti. Against North Sevier, Nilsson scored in the 14th, 24th, and 38th minutes for her first ever hat trick, giving her 12 goals on the year. Meseret Deskins and Brissa Orozco provided the assists as the Bulldogs took that 3-0 lead into halftime. The Wolves missed two penalty kicks in the second half before scoring at fullstrength in the 30th minute to cut the Bulldog lead to 3-1. The Wolves took advantage of their third penalty kick to trim the lead to 3-2 with just seconds remaining. The time ticked off and the Bulldogs had the win, qualifying for the 2A state playoffs for the first time. “That’s wonderful,” said Gunnison head coach Jaron Jensen. “It was a great game. The girls kind of gave me a scare. Brissa controlled a lot of that game for us. Clara Scharf and Gabi Gomez had sensational games through the middle, and Sarah finished some beautiful goals. We’ve just got to finish a little bit better. That’s what we’ve lacked all year, just a little bit more finish. But it’s coming. Ya gotta love it,” Jensen said. Gabi Gomez is a junior and one of the most improved players for the Bulldogs, taking over at sweeper late in the year. “It’s been really fun this year,” Gabi said. “All of the games have been good Thursday, October 16, 2008 Copy Price • 75 cents The Community Living Center dining room. modern center will have many more conveniences than the old manor, it is evident to see that the patients will enjoy a better quality of living. Gabi’s sister Mari is a junior defender for the Bulldogs, and her sister Brenda is a freshman midfielder. Against Richfield, the Wildcats grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute and it held until halftime. The Bulldogs tied it up five minutes into the second half on a combo play involving Deskins, Nilsson, and Breanna Young. It was Deskins putting a hard shot in the net from 10 yards out to even the match at 1-1. Richfield went up 2-1 in the 26th minute of the second half, but the Bulldogs pressed forward. It paid off in the final minute when Deskins found Nilsson, who fired a shot from 14 yards into the back right corner, tying the match at 2-2. The referee blew the whistle just seconds after that, and the game went to overtime. Mitch Peterson/Gunnison Valley Gazette Gunnison defender Karen Orozco (13) is set to head away a pass last Tuesday, October 7th, in Salina, as Bulldog sweeper Gabi Gomez (9) looks on. The Bulldogs beat North Sevier 3-2, clinching their first ever playoff spot. Each team had a scoring chance in the first 10-minute overtime period. Nilsson put a shot on goal in the 7th minute, and Jensen made a save in the 8th. A couple minutes into the second overtime, Nilsson booted in a loose ball from about 8 yards out for her second goal of the day, giving the Bulldogs the 3-2 overtime win. The speedy Nilsson finished the regular season with 14 goals, including 5 in the last two games, but she’s just happy the team is winning. “I don’t really remember the goals I score,” Nilsson said. “I like the moment, but I’m just out there to have fun. This is the new Gunnison soccer team.” she said. Nilsson gives a lot of credit to players like Brissa Orozco. “We’re all improving, but she’s getting better every game,” she said. Nilsson and Meseret Deskins are a dangerous front-line duo. “I asked coach how he figures out who works well together,” Nilsson said. “He says Mes is a person that surveys the field and looks for holes, and I’m the one that finds those holes.” She enjoys playing for coach Jensen, calling him a genuine guy. “He’s not fake, and he helps us all the time.” she said. In addition to Nilsson and Deskins, wingers Breanna Young and Heather Matthews have come on strong this year, and the back line of Mari Gomez, Karen Orozco, and Kayla Peterson cause major problems for opponents. Midfielders Gabi Gomez, Brenda Gomez, Brissa Orozco, and Clara Scharf have done a great job moving the ball around, and goalkeeper Megan Jensen comes up big in every match. The playoff game against Grand is this Wednesday, October 15th, at 4 pm. If the Bulldogs win that one, they’ll head to Ogden to play St. Joseph Catholic School on Saturday, October 18th, at 1 pm. If you’re going to the Grand match, the field is at the high school at 608 South, 400 East, in Moab. The Bulldogs and Red Devils split the season series, each winning at home. freedom-ford-mercury.com |
