CATTLE DRIVE CONCERNS I dread this time of year when the cattle are driven up on the mountain as well as the fall when they come down. Last fall we had some cows come in our yard and destroy an area we had just spent several weeks preparing and planting grass. No one ever stopped or came back to say “sorry” or offer to help repair it. This past week we went to Lake Powell with our ward youth conference and came home to find major damage to our fence by cattle trying to jump the fence. Again, no one came to take re- sponsibility for the damage. My entire yard is fenced except for a driveway 100 feet down a lane; so I feel like I’m doing my part to protect my property. I understand that keeping cattle under control is not easy, but it would be nice to have the owners show some common courtesy. Several years ago one of these animals came down our lane and went into our back field. We tried several times to chase it out without any luck, so we shut the gate and tried to find the owner, again without luck. The cow had a calf while here, but no one came to claim it. It took more than a week to find the owner. If something had happened to these animals while on my property I’m sure I would be in trouble and yet an animal can cause damage to my property and no one is responsible. Somehow that doesn’t seem right. I don’t know all of the rights and rules cattlemen have to follow, but I’m angry that they don’t take responsibility for the damage they do. Dorinne Jacobs Mayfield Remember When... Clark and Elise Bown were awarded the DSA and Outstanding Young Woman award, Jerrica Pickett and Mike Boyce (inset) were awarded the Outstanding Youth award by the Gunnison Jaycees. Jaycees present DSA by MARK HENLINE Sixty-two years ago the Gunnison Valley Jaycees began a tradition of recognizing a member of the community for the service they render. This tradition has been carried on every year since 1946. The first Distinguished Service winner in our valley was Woodrow Beck. In 1968 the Jaycees began to recognize an outstanding youth in the community. That first year Ardella Taylor was recognized as the valley’s outstanding youth. Then, in 1983 the Jaycees once again added another award, the Outstanding Young Woman award which was given to Jeanette Andersen. This year the DSA’s were presented on the night of July 3rd following the dinner at the park. The recipients for the youth awards were Jerrica Pickett and Michael Boyce. The 2008 Outstanding Young Woman award and the 2008 Distinguished Service Award went to a very deserving husband and wife team, Clark and Elise Bown. Congratulations to all of this year’s recipients! The passing of the School Bond was a result of many people understanding the critical issues of this much-needed Elementary Building Program. The Bond Election was really a vote for kids. The voters made it perfectly clear that the education of children is very important not only for them but also for the future of America. Daniel Pink, a well-known educational author, summarized this by saying, “Prepare students for their future, not our past.” When it comes to new school construction, administrators, teachers and architects realize that the future is now, and they are creating unique K-5 facilities to last well into the unknown future, using design elements that will include flexibility and sustainability The tentative time-line for the District’s Building Program will be as follows: (1) meet with the architects to plan and design the buildings, (2) prepare all of the projects for bidding, (3) begin construction early in 2009, and (4) complete building projects by August of 2010. Thanks, again, for your dedication and commitment in supporting the District’s Bond Election.
