Show Sports Thursday, February 28, 2008 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 7 Spring is in the air Off the Cuff By ANDY HILL By the looks of the weather lately you would never guess that a new season for the Bull- dog baseball team was just around the corner. Coming off a 24-3 season last year that was capped off by a 2A state championship, the Bulldogs are looking forward to another memorable season. And with the returning of eight starters from the 2007 team, things are looking better than ever for another run at the title. The Bulldogs will start their season on March 7th and 8th when they travel to Kanab for the annual Cowboy Classic. The “First Pitch” at Bulldog field will follow the next week on the 11th when Gunnison hosts the team from up north, the Manti Templars. As a part of this game, there are some exciting festivities that are planned, so make sure that you don’t miss that one. And then the following weekend, the annual Hillsports Classic will take place here in Gunnison on the 14th and 15th. So if you are looking for something to get rid of the Winter Blues, come out and watch some exciting Bulldog Baseball this spring. I promise that you won’t be disappointed. The season is fast and furious, so don’t miss a minute of the action. Bulldog Pride Award Congratulations to Freshmen Heidi Sorensen and Brogan Neal for being chosen to receive the Bulldog Pride award at GVHS. Heidi is the daughter of Wayne and Ann Sorensen of Centerfield. She currently serves as a Freshmen Class officer, she participates in the GVHS band and Pep band where she played at the home football and basketball games. Heidi played her violin as a member of the orchestra for the school musical, Oklahoma. She has played in the last four high school musicals. Heidi Sorensen Heidi was also a member of the orchestra for the recent community play, She Loves Me. She works after school at the Gunnison Civic Library, and also at the Gunnison Valley Animal Clinic. Heidi serves as a counselor in her ward Mia Maids class at church. She has also played in the community soccer leagues. Heidi loves to read, and she also enjoys baking, camping and horseback riding. Brogan is the son of Sally Neal and the late Michael Neal of Gunnison. Brogan knows how important good grades are and he tries to do well in his classes. He is involved in Basketball, Football, and Baseball at GVHS. Brogan enjoys Physics and he thinks Mr. Johnson is the best. Brogan is a teacher and 2nd counselor in his Quorum at church. He is working on his star for scouts. He is also the President of his Seminary class. Brogan Neal Snowboarding, Xbox, Playstation, and playing sports are all activities that Brogan enjoys. He loves girls, and likes the snow, and he knows how to make fantastic brownies. Brogan likes to spend time with his cousins. It’s the inaugural season for 2A boys soccer. Spring sports begin by MITCH PETERSON Less than 48 hours after the official end of the 2A high school winter sports season, it’s the official start of the spring sports season. There was a lot of running, throwing, hitting, kicking and volleying last Monday, Feb. 25th, as Gunnison High School student athletes began try-outs, practices, and individual workouts at sites across the school campus. The Bulldog boys soccer team worked out Monday under the direction of head coach Jaron Jensen and assistant Alex Jensen- their first-ever official practice session. This will be the inaugural season for boy’s soccer as a fully sanctioned 2A sport. The Bulldogs are the current local club champions and looking to take that success to the next level. They’ll play their home matches at the soccer field just north of the Bulldog’s football field. Over 20 players were on hand for Monday’s first practice. They’ll jump right into Region 12 action, hosting the Richfield Wildcats in their first match on Tuesday, March 4, at home against Richfield. Lady Bulldog softball players were working out in the old gym when I caught up with them last Monday. Bret Ashton will again lead the team as head coach. Assistant coaches Boyd Allred and Wayne Jones were working with the players Monday on hitting technique before heading outside to work on some fielding drills. Wasps on Tuesday, March 4th. Then they’ll travel to Kanab for the annual Chuckwagon Classic on Friday and Saturday, March 7th and 8th. The Lady Bulldogs were undefeated at that tournament last year. They’ll also play in a tournament at St. George on March 14th and 15th. The Bulldog boys tennis season officially starts next Monday, but some players who couldn’t wait to hit the courts got in some early serves and volleys this week. Head coach Doug Agren’s squad will play their first match against Richfield on Wednesday, March 12th. Head coach Jared Anderson’s Gunnison baseball team are the defending state champions. They’ll begin their title defense at the Kanab Chuckwagon Classic on March 7th and 8th. They were also undefeated at this tournament last year. Head coach Todd Peterson and the Bulldog track and field team start the season on Tuesday, March 11th, at a meet in Nephi hosted by the Juab Wasps. Girls golf is now an officially sanctioned high school spring sport. Schools can field a complete team of at least five golfers, or players can represent the school as individuals. So far, no GVHS girls have signed on to play. There are plenty of opportunities for students to be involved in spring sports. Contact the coaches or school administrators for information about getting signed up.
