Show Schools Page 6 The Gunnison Valley Gazette The Gunnison FFA chapter competed recently in the Area VII FFA contest. In this contest they compete against Manti, Delta, Emery, North Sanpete, and Juab. The Gunnison winners were as follows: 2nd Place Parliamentary procedure team: Cheyenne Thatcher, Kolton Crane, Kameron Crane, Caden Burrell, Sam Hansen, Tyrell Hansen and Shontaye Atwood. 1st place winner in creed contest Caden Burrell. Gunnison also won the following proficiency awards 8 total; Allen Boore in Ag Mechanics Repair and Maintenance, Kade Bown in Ag Mechanics Design and Fabrication and Environmental Science and Natural Resources, Tyrell Hansen in Diversified Livestock Production, Sam Brown in Agriculture processing, Casey Bown in Dairy Production, Kolton Crane in Wildlife production management, and Henry Hammond in Beef production. LINDA MILLER Career and technical education (CTE) jump-starts students’ careers by preparing them for jobs while still in, or just out of high school. Students have an advantage of increasing their earning power by entering the job market early. CTE creates pathways to success for every secondary students by providing him or her with the technical skills and academic knowledge needed to prepare for future employment and/or a successful transition to post-secondary education. CTE provides students with technical training to prepare for a successful career. The structured training each students receives gives him or her the tools needed to be successful in a job after high school and/or further his or her post-secondary education. Whether technical school, two- year college or four-year college. Each students is en- couraged to explore various areas of study and to develop the essential skills to enter today’s competitive job market with confidence. Career and Technical Education is an essential component of the total educational system in Utah and is critical to the country’s ability to compete in a global economy. CTE is provided in a variety of setting and levels including middle school career exploration, secondary programs, post secondary certificates and degrees, and customized training for employees in the workplace. The role of Career and Technical Education is to: • Provide career and technical education is the state’s K-12 system of public education. • Introduce students to career options. • Assist in development of career choices. • Provide technical skills • Provide occupationspecific skills. • Prepare students for further education and training. CTE provides courses and programs consistent with industry standards. Courses begin in the 7th grade with the exploratory CTE Intro course. Subsequent courses in grades 8-12 teach students specific job readiness and job skills, which can led to employment and postsecondary education. Youth Farm Safety Course Christi Garff/Gunnison Valley Gazette GVHS Jazz Band at BYU Jazz Festival. BYU and GVHS Jazz Band by CHRISTI GARFF Friday February 15th the Gunnison Valley High School Jazz band performed at the BYU Jazz Festival in the BYU Campus in Provo, Utah. The band performed three numbers for the judicators including; One O’clock Jump, I Remember Clifford, and Count Bubba’s Revenge. One O’clock Jump featured a trumpet solo by senior Justin Allred. Senior Cari Garff was featured with her solo on trumpet entitled “I Remember Clifford. The jazz band performed well for judicators. After their performance they attended a clinic with a member of the “Army Blues Band.” He worked with the band on phrasing which will help the band polish these jazz numbers for future performances. The band concluded the evening by attending a concert at the Harris Fine Arts Center Jr. Prom The Gunnison Valley High School’s Junior Class of 2008 will be having their prom Saturday, March 1st. The theme this year is “With Me”. A tea for all juniors and their parents will be held that evening in the auditorium at 7 p.m. The dance begins at 8:30 p.m. with the promenade at 9 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance in the school office Monday, February 25 through Friday, February 29. Tickets will also be sold at the door Saturday evening. Tickets prices are as follows: $8 per couple, $5 single, and $3 for the promenade. Pictures will be taken from 8 p.m. to midnight. HEAP WEEK of the that featured “The Army Blues Band” and BYU”s own “Synthesis.” This Jazz Festival was extremely helpful for the Jazz Band as they begin to prepare in earnest for the region Jazz Festival Competition on March 14th. This was the Jazz Bands first opportunity to perform the musical numbers they will be competing with at that festival in March. Dixie drives a 1999 Ford Taurus. “Gets me to school and back.” HEAP of the WEEK The Farm Bureau and the Utah State University Extension are planning their annual Farm Safety Certification Class for young people. This class fulfills the requirements for youth ages 14-16 that are planning on working on farms. It is also a great class for Youth between the age of 12-18 that live and/or work on farms and ranches. Please encourage your children and your young workers to attend this two day safety training class. It could save their life. The class will be held on March 7th -8th. Please call the Sanpete County Extension office at 283-7597 for more information and to reserve a spot in the class.
