After falling 9-1 to North Sevier in Salina last Tuesday, August 4th, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Richfield last Thursday before the Wildcats scored on couple of penalty kicks and eventually prevailed 5-2. Freshman forward Karen Orosco continues to have the hot foot for the Bulldogs, scoring the lone goal against North Sevier in last Tuesday’s match, and adding her third of the year against Richfield. Bulldog junior Meseret Deskins scored the first goal against the Wildcats on an early penalty kick. Against North Sevier, the Bulldogs offense created a couple chances around the 7 minute mark on some nice work up front by Orozco, Heather Matthews, and Meseret and Fekirte Deskins. But the Wolves broke through the Gunnison defense and grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, then added another goal just one minute later for a 2-0 lead. Just one minute after that, Fekirte Deskins found some space and fired a hard shot from about 18 yards out that required a tough save by the Wolves keeper. Both defenses took over for awhile, but the Wolves went up 3-0 on a 26th minute penalty kick after the ball bounced up and hit a Gunnison player’s arm while she was inside the 18 yard box. The wolves added two more goals for a 5-0 lead at halftime. After North Sevier added two goals in the first seven minutes of the second half, the Bulldogs began to find some offensive pace. Fekirte fired a shot on goal in the 9th minute, but the Wolves goalie was positioned to make the stop. Then, in the 10th minute, Meseret took a throw-in from Fekirte, and sent a cross from the right side to Orozco in front of the net. Orozco made no mistake as she booted in her second goal of the year to get the Bulldogs on the board. A nice Gunnison give-andgo-play from Orozco to Meseret and back to Orozco nearly resulted in a goal in the 18th minute, but Orozco’s shot went just by MITCH PETERSON Mitch Peterson/Gunnison Valley Gazette Gunnison freshman forward Karen Orozco breaks away from a Richfield defender during last week’s home match against the Wildcats. Bulldog defender Marielle Gomez made some nice tackles and clears during the game, and in the 21st minute she was forced to bring down a Wolves forward in the 18-yard box, resulting in a Wolves penalty kick. This time, Jensen made the stop in the oneon-one situation. Jensen made another nice stop just a minute later on a point blank shot. The Wolves squeaked in another goal in the 40th minute to win it 9-1, but the Bulldogs were encouraged after the match with their passing and the way the defense found their rhythm. Against Richfield at home last Thursday, August 6th, the Bulldogs forced the action early, resulting in two early corner kick situations. On the second corner kick, the Wildcats were called for a hand ball violation as they tried to clear. Meseret took the penalty kick from the 12-yard spot and got her first goal of the year as she struck it perfectly into the top right corner of the net, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs kept up the pressure, and it paid off again in the 11th minute. After another Gunnison corner kick was stopped by the Wildcat goalie, Fekirte Deskins and Heather Matthews kept the play alive. Jensen preserved the lead with saves in the 18th and 23rd minute, while Orozco continued to give the Richfield defenders fits down the left side, firing shots on goal in the 22nd and 23rd minutes. In the 25th minute, a Richfield forward seemed to have a breakaway on a long pass, but Jensen came well out of her net and got to the ball a split second ahead of the Wildcat player, resulting in a hard collision that, fortunately, everyone walked away from. Fekirte Deskins beat Richfield’s goalie in the 28th minute, but the shot went off the right post. Jensen then made a big stop on a Richfield free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. Another free kick from nearly the same position just one minute later bounced in the net after a scramble in front, cutting the Bulldogs lead to 2-1. A long Richfield pass followed by a rising shot from 12 yards out just a couple minutes later tied the score at 2-2. Fekirte found herself all alone about 15 yards out from the Richfield net in the 37th minute. She turned and sent a hard shot on goal, but the Wildcat goalie again made the stop and the teams went to the halftime break tied at 2-2. The Wildcats converted a penalty shot in the second minute of the second half, giving them a 3-2 lead. The Bulldogs nearly scored in the 14th minute when Meseret Deskins sent a corner kick to the front of the net and Orozco headed it down. But the Richfield goalie made the save. The Wildcats went up 4-2 in the 19th minute when they picked up a loose ball in front of the net and put it over the line. Another Gunnison penalty in the 25th minutes resulted in another penalty kick goal and a 5-2 lead for the Wildcats. The Bulldogs kept pressing forward, but couldn’t find the net again as the Wildcats escaped with the 5-2 win. This week, the Bulldogs play at Beaver on Tuesday, August 11th, then travel to Manti for a re-match with the Templars on Thursday, August 13th. That Manti match is actually in Ephraim, at the city park on the northeast side of town. Just look for the light towers. Bulldog all-around player Meseret Deskins says it was teamwork that led to the team’s good showing against Richfield. “We’ve been practicing to get it done as a team, and learning our positions,” Deskins said. Meseret plays hard all over the field. She can break up a play and make a steal defensively, then head downfield to get involved in her team’s offense. “Sometimes I’m the sweeper, and sometimes I’m up at forward,” Deskins said. “I like being in the middle, so when I see the ball coming, I can see where my players are and pass it to them.” When she’s not playing soccer, Deskins says she likes to read, and ride horses. Bulldog head coach Jaron Jensen liked his team’s start against Richfield. “But when they tied the score at 2-2, the girls kind of felt down about it and didn’t quite pick themselves up and didn’t move as much,” Jensen said. “The second half we started out well again, but we flat out just had too many penalties. But they’re just getting better and better each week. They had some passion today they’ve never shown before. And even in the North Sevier game, we were passing a lot better. It’s coming together, and I’m enjoying it,” Jensen said. Selling it Yourself? Let us Help! Place a Classified Ad for as little as $6 per week. Add a picture for only $5 more. The young team lost their first two matches of the year, to Manti and South Sevier, but it was good to get started. On their way home after the match in Monroe against South Sevier last Thursday, the team Suburban broke down, stranding the team near Richfield for about an hour and a half until alternate transportation arrived to shuttle the team back home. Just two of the girls, Tessa Christensen and Halie Garff, had played on the tennis team before this year, so Head coach Doug Agren knows the team will struggle on the court, but they’re enjoying the opportunity to represent the school. “They play with a lot of enthusiasm, and they’re having a lot of fun,” Agren said. Bulldog sophomore Halie Garff played last year, and this year she’s playing #1 singles. “It’s been really fun,” Garff said. Halie says her older sister, Cari, got her into tennis a couple years ago. “I enjoy all of the game, and the other players and coach Agren makes it fun,” she said. Halie also sings with the school’s Cantus group, and was with them when they performed the National Anthem at a Utah Jazz game last spring. This week, the Bulldogs head to Moab Tuesday for a region doubleheader. They’ll play Grand County first, then tangle with the San Juan Broncos afterward. The Bulldogs take on VOLLEYBALL Continued from Page 7 three as they built an 8-2 lead, but the Bulldogs went on a 10-6 run to narrow it to 14-12. Winters had two kills during that comeback, while Cami Carlisle added an ace and Thatcher had a kill of her own. The Wolves then built another modest lead at 20-13, but the Bulldogs rattled off four points in a row, including an ace from Felicia Jensen, to get to within three at 20-17. A Carlisle ace and a Pickett kill helped the Bulldogs play the Wolves even the rest of the match, but North Sevier hung on to win the game 25-21, and the match 3-0. Gunnison head coach Jody Allred says he liked the effort against the tough Wolves team. “They’re a state champion quality team coming at us, but we put up a pretty good fight,” Allred said. He adds that his team gave BULLDOGS Continued from Page 7 to bring them up 6-10 against the Dogs. With the Bulldogs not to be denied, they took the kick off and drove from the Bulldog 20 behind the running of Harris on a 17 yard Buck Waggle and a 10 yard Belly, putting two first downs on the board, followed up by Trevor Madsen on a 10 yard pass for another first. The next play proved to be the tide changing play with Neal breaking it up the wide open middle for 47 yards and a touchdown that was brought back on a controversial call on the 2 yard line. The Bulldogs fell short and could not score after that. Closing out the 3rd quarter and with the Rams taking control and scoring two plays later it seemed as if the Bulldogs were not able to get back on track. The Bulldogs pushing the ball up the middle behind Hansen, Crane, and Bown, Neal was able to rack up 30 more yards but the drive came up short on an interception. The defense of the Bulldogs came up with another stop on a great play by Frandsen who came up strong on a fake punt and stopping the punter short of the first down. The Bulldogs had another Richfield at home on Thursday, September 13th, in another region match. The Bulldogs boys golf team fired their best team score of the season at last week’s rainy region match at the Carbon Country Club in Price. Max Sanders led the way individually with an 83. Carson Lund, Jeremy Reid, Jarom Christensen, Drayson Ball, and Kade Caldwell also made the trip to Price, where Reid, Christensen, Ball, and Caldwell each shot their lowest round of the year. The season is already winding down, with the final regular season region match Wednesday, September, 12, at Palisade, followed by the region championship a week later, on September 19th, also at Palisade. Bulldog senior Jeremy Reid’s 89 at Price was his lowest round of the year, and he attributes it to what many would consider adverse weather conditions. “I’ve always wanted to play in the rain,” he said. Reid says his team will be happy to get back to their home course for the last two matches of the year. “We love Palisade,” he said. Reid, who also plays basketball and tennis for the Bulldogs, says he also likes playing the Spanish Oaks course in Spanish Fork. Especially if it’s raining. Max Sanders continues to lead the Bulldogs in scoring average, and his 83 at last week’s match in Price was good for 7th place overall. Sanders is fifth in region scoring average at 83.3, while Carson Lund is 12th overall, averaging 86. the Wolves too many chances. “We put too many free balls over the net,” Allred said. “Against a team like this, it’s like handing them the ball and saying here, hit it at me. We want to be more aggressive on our third hit and attacking the net more.” Bulldog junior outside hitter Cheyenne Thatcher fires up the crowd with her big kills, but credits teammates with getting her the ball. “A lot of it comes from the team and their support,” Thatcher said. Thatcher stays busy off the court as a class officer and member of the Future Farmers of America and the Future Business Leaders of America. She knows there are no easy nights in Region 12 volleyball. “We’re going to go out and play hard every night,” she said. This week, the Bulldogs host South Sevier Thursday, September 13th, in a Region 12 match. great opportunity to make things happen but came up short for the last time on another interception. The Bulldogs closed out the game with a loss of a score of 6 – 17 to the Parowan Rams. Jackson threw for over 180 yards in the hands of Gubeli, Davis, Madsen, and the Bulldogs rushed for over 158 yards behind Anderson, Neal, Harris and Frandsen. They were able to put together 17 first downs and still came up short in this the last of their pre-season games. The stat that made the difference would be turnovers. Parowan came away with a perfect game in the turnover category and the Bulldogs had 2 turnovers. To summarize with the question, Did the Bulldogs lose their bite? I don’t think so, they still were able to put up the numbers, they just need to continue to make the big plays, work the clock, use the pass and stay focused and they will play with any team out there right now. The Bulldogs will now go into the regular season against the South Summit Wildcats this coming Friday at Gunnison Stadium. This will be their opportunity to redeem themselves on their home field. Good luck Bulldogs take a bite out of the Cats on Friday. |
