I recently attended a Commission meeting and am well aware that Commissioner Jarrett likes to lecture citizens with whom she disagrees. I would like to inform her the Constitution was NOT created to protect the government from the citizens, but to protect the citizens from the government! The following comments are in response to Commissioner Jarretts article August 29, 2007 Sanpete Messenger. It is not the courts that pose a danger to our children, but the criminal element and environment created by their presence. She doesn’t understand how we rally around our troops in Iraq and not want those freedoms for Sanpete. Isn’t the right to disagree with our elected officials exactly what our troops past and present fight for? Does she really believe that in Iraq they would even think of placing a court building next to a pool and school! The Iraqi’s are smarter than that, too bad our elected officials aren’t! Those who disagree with her are putting domestic tranquility at risk? In a recent meeting I witnessed her shaking her finger at a citizen who posed a simple question about the legality of placing such a building in close proximity to a school or pool. On recordings the Commission can be heard whispering comments making fun of citizens opposing their point of view. Who’s putting tranquility at risk? Now the commissioners say they have yet to formalize an agreement regarding location! For over a year they’ve stated in print and on record their intention to place the building on Fairground property next to the school and pool. They hired an architect and building plans were completed by May 2006. They were quoted May 31, 2006 “the location is just east of the new pool”. Now they are backtracking. The “yet to formalize an agreement regarding location” is their new statement resulting after a large group of citizens attended their meeting. FYI the bond figure in May 2006 was $5 million, then $7 million, last week the Commission raised it to $8.5 million. Sound familiar? Deja Vu - new county jail. Yet Commissioner Jarrett thanks the citizens for supporting that bond and “pledging through OUR property taxes any revenue shortfall in repayment of the debt”. How nice to have sexual predators lurking around on the grounds watching the children at the pool or school! So what if a hardened criminal makes a break, they’ll have their choice of classrooms should they want hostages. Won’t it be wonderful to see a lighted court building across from the temple upon entering this valley! Build the STATE building away from a public school and pool, use STATE funds and STATE planners. To those who believe it is a great idea to place a court building next to a school and pool, Google OZ, visit the Wizard, perhaps the Scarecrow didn’t get the last brain!! She showed a bunch of pictures of her grandkids that live in Muskegon, Michigan. She went there in July for a visit. Her son Melvin works at a place where they make parts for cars. She said he has a good job but they may go on strike next year. Ada said she was on strike one time when she was living in Los Angeles in 1962. She worked at an airplane factory and when the strike happened she had to walk around all day with a sign. She said the news folks came and filmed them and she was on the news two times in one day. It was the same story both times but she called her family and told them to watch and the family was happy she was doing good and got to be on television. Doris said people who go on strike should be fired because they upset everything and cause trouble. She told about the garbage strike in New York a long time ago and Thur Sept 6 Vegetable Beef Stew Apple Salad Cinnamon Roll Crackers how the garbage piled up in the streets so bad people couldn’t stand to smell it so they stayed inside all the time and when the garbage men finally got what they wanted the junk got picked up but it was just terrible while that mess was in the streets. Adele said the only people she knows who strike here in Utah is the school teachers. Her niece teaches at the school in Tabiona and she told Adele that if there ever is a strike they just hold school anyway because they know they won’t be on the news so they just do school as usual and it saves a lot of commotion in the end. Helen brought a letter she got last week from that tall Negro fellow running for president. She showed it to all of us and the letter said he has the answers to the problems facing senior citizens and the rest of the country. They wanted her to donate some money to his campaign but she doesn’t do things like that and she wondered how they got her address. Dora said she was watching a show on television and the government is giving addresses to big companies all the time and that’s why these credit card outfits are always calling on the phone. Mildred told us Melvin and his family are coming home for Thanksgiving this year and that will be a treat for her. They plan to spend several days with her before they go back to Michigan. Our last item of business was to write to the county com- missioners to find out what is going on south of Manti. Edgar said he saw the whole county road department working there last week. He said if the road crew is doing construction work then who is taking care of the county roads? He said Cox Bros. is out of business so it can’t be them. Edgar has some strong opinions about the fairgrounds and all this other stuff. He said government needs to do things the way the old timers did. If they couldn’t afford something, they did without until they could afford it. He says he thought all three of the county commissioners were decent, honest Republicans, and folks wouldn’t have to worry about the county spending money on this and that, but from what he’s seen lately, the commission looks like a bunch of Democrats and if that can happen in SanPete, then the country isn’t safe and Mrs. Clinton can start packing her suitcase to move back to the White House. We didn’t say anything when Edgar finished. He’s been quite upset over that senator who got caught in the bathroom and resigned. He said he’d expect stuff like that from a Democrat, but Republicans should know better than to do things like that. Gladys will host our next meeting in her backyard. Her fall flowers are just beginning to blossom and it will be so nice to meet outside before it gets too cold.
