Show Opinions Page 2 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Now that’s service Just A Thought By MARK HENLINE I love going into places of business where the employees are excited and act as if they really enjoy their job. These people are usually friendly, outgoing and carry a big smile on their face. Their attitude makes your shopping or dining a far better experience. On the other hand, and far more common, is the business where the employees act as if they are bored or they could really care less about their jobs, let alone smile or try to be friendly. Recently my family went on a little vacation and we had a few great customer service experiences. The first one was at a Super Target near our hotel that we visited a few times during our stay. We couldn’t walk into that store without the employees smiling and asking us if they could help us find anything. On one of those occasions I was asked four times before I even made it to the back of the store. My wife said, “It’s because you always have that dumb look on your face.” Not only were they friendly but when something rang up wrong the cashier didn’t automatically reach for the microphone and call for a price check, she just entered in the price we told her and carried on. Then on another occasion my wife bought a hard roll at the deli. When we walked over to where the condiments were, all they had was margarine, so I asked the lady who had just helped us if they had any butter packets. They didn’t have any but she went and got a stick of butter and cut off a couple of squares for us. Now that’s service! Our next experience was at a little fast food place called Wahoo’s. The sign said it was known for its fish tacos. The place had a different menu than Homespun Philosophy by Gene and Donna Peterson There are people with “altitude” problems, Which they let out in plain view; And leave you with the feeling, That they’ve been looking down at you! Plan to Attend the 73rd Annual what we were used to, but the woman taking our order was knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful. She helped us order, made suggestions and said she would give us free drinks since it was our first time there. As we were eating she came out and talked to us and explained a little about the restaurant’s history. I asked her if she was the owner, she said no she was just an employee. It was obvious to me that she loved her job. As we left, even the guy wiping down tables waved and told us to have a nice evening, and thanks, in a large part to the way we were treated and the fantastic food, we did have a nice evening. One of my favorite places to visit, because of its excitement and pure enthusiasm, is the Pike Place Fish Market on Pike Street in Seattle. The employees, dressed in waterproof bibs and calf high rubber boots, turn your shopping for fresh fish into a great experience. In fact there was a large crowd gathered just to watch. Someone would order a crab and the salesman would yell, “One fat crab,” then he would pick up a crab and toss it over the counter where another man would weigh it, wrap it, price it and throw it back. Another man ordered a salmon. One employee told the man to hold still while he put a paper cup on the man’s head. Then the employee picked up the salmon, threw it over the man’s head knocking the cup off and landing the fish into the hands of another employee who wrapped it up. I bought a ball cap and when I tried it on the employee yelled, “How does he look folks?” The crowd answered by clapping. The Pike Place Fish Market was one of the highlights of that trip. What a difference it makes when people love what they do and when they serve others with enthusiasm and a big smile. Thursday, June 28, 2007 Remember When...
