Alumnus Kenny Walker directed this year’s one act play entitled “Why We Laugh.” This one act play takes the audience on a comical journey through the life of one couple. The production begins with the couple at six years of age. Cast members Cari Garff and Jacob Johnson portrayed the youngsters. Next the audience finds the couple at 15 years of age; Jessica Ward and Ethan Young played them as teens. At the age of 45 the couple was played by Annie Jensen and Ryan Williams. Then finally the couple is seen in their 66th year. Tawna Peterson and George Snell played the elderly couple. The judges were amazed at how similar the characters looked at the various stages of their lives. Darryl Warren was the Page 5 Bullying Lead me, guide me... By GVMS COUNSELOR SHARON MECHAM Eleanor Roosevelt stated, “Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home-so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college she attends; the factory, farm or office where he works, such are the places where every man, woman and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.” According to Stan Davis, and based on the book Schools Where Everyone Belongs, 2005 What is bullying? Hitting, namecalling, exclusion, or other behavior that is meant to hurt another person. Bullying is carried out by someone who has more power against someone who has less power. Do we have to know that someone means to hurt someone else before we can discipline for behavior that hurts? No. when we discourage all peer-to-peer aggression we also deal with bullying. The word “discipline” comes from the same root as the word “disciple” and means “to teach.” We are most likely to succeed in helping young people to change their aggressive behavior when we use the principles of good teaching in our discipline interventions. We start with the ABC’s A. Respect young peoples’ Autonomy. We can’t make them change. We can increase the cost of their existing behavior by following through consistently with consequences. We can build supportive relationships so they want to be contributing members of the school. We can recognize their positive actions. They will choose their behavior; we can help them see they have a choice and help them find the best choices for themselves. B. Maintain young peoples’ sense of Belonging. When we welcome youth to school each day; when we build mentoring relationships; when consequences are seen as being earned instead of being given in anger or rejection; when we avoid taking their misbehavior personally; and when we maintain positive feeling tone in the discipline process, young people are more likely to take responsibility for negative behaviors and to change. C. Teach Cause and Effect thinking and promote conscience development. We help young people see the connections between what they do and what happens to them through using predictable, transparent, consistent discipline approaches. We can help them discover the positive and negative effects of their actions on others through observation and reflection. We can use questions instead of statements whenever possible so young people learn to think about their own goals and about their behavior.
