Leading in assist was Lisa Bartholomew with 6, Bailey Reynolds with 4, Sam Coulter with 4 and Sarah Southwick and Teigen Jensen with one each. Bulldog forward, Kevin Nay started the scoring with a big three-pointer to get the Dogs off and running. The Dogs matched up well with the Red Devils and after one, the score was Grand 13, Gunnison 11. The second quarter had balanced scoring from the Bulldogs as six different players put points on the board. But the Dogs also had several turnovers which led to some easy fast break points for Grand. The Red Devils outscored the Bulldogs by thirteen points in the second and went to the locker room with a 3526 lead. The Bulldogs outscored Grand in the third period 24-22. The Dogs were led by Nay who put thirteen points on the board in the third. The fourth quarter started with the Dogs hitting the first five points to pull within two. The Dogs then turned the ball over on their next four possessions and Grand took advantage by increasing the lead to six. Erick Rosenvall fouled out with 5:15 left in the 4th quarter. The Dogs continued to fight their way back into the game. Senior Brendon Davis committed his fifth personal foul and left the game with 1:47 left. Junior Jeremy Reid came in to take his place. With 1:09 left in the game, freshman Derrick Christensen pulled up and hit a high arching threepointer to tie the game up. The big shot electrified the crowd and everyone rose to their feet, the old gym was rocking. The Devils brought the ball in and drove down court for a quick bucket. Gunnison answered quickly as Nay scored two with .33 ticks left to tie the game back up. The next trip down the floor, the Devils put up a shot that went in but the Grand player was also fouled on the shot and turned it into an old fashioned three-point play. The foul was committed by Taylor Ashton, which was his fifth and he left the game with .26 seconds left. Trailing by three, the Bulldogs started bringing the ball down court but turned the ball over and Larry Childs/Gunnison Valley Gazette Derrick Christensen driving for a lay up. Taylor Newman was forced to foul sending Grand to the line for a one and one with only twenty seconds left. This was Newman’s fifth personal foul and he was forced to leave the game. Leading the game by three, Grand had a chance to put the game on ice with a couple of free throws. The free throw was shot and rimmed off and Bulldog Carson Lund came down with a huge rebound. The Bulldogs brought the ball down, getting it into the hands of Christensen who pulled up and shot a three-pointer from downtown Mayfield, that hit nothing but net and tied the score at 79 with only six seconds remaining. The Bulldogs quickly stood five wide at center court and Grand was unable to connect. Regulation ended with the score 79-79. Overtime began with Grand stalling for almost a minute before they shot but then they went on to score eight straight points before Gunnison could get any points on the board. Gunnison, with four key players fouled out of the game, just seemed to run out of juice and were outscored 12-4 in the overtime period. The final score was Grand 91, Gunnison 83. This was a hard loss to take as the boys put everything they had into it. The Dogs hit five three-pointers in the game and went 24 for 32 from the line for 75%. The individual scoring went as follows: Jeremy Reid played in the fourth quarter and handed in a rebound. Carson Lund had a rebound, which was huge to help send the game into overtime. Erick Rosenvall also had a rebound and added six points. Brendon Davis had seven rebound to go with his five points. Derrick Christensen had a rebound and two steals along with 16 points including his two huge three-pointers in the last minute of regulation. Ashton played tough as always and managed a rebound, two steals and four points. Newman had a good game with three rebounds, two steals, a blocked shot and ten points. Sam Judd also played a great game with five rebounds, five steals and eight points. Nay had a monster game, leading the team in rebounding with twelve, steals with five (tied with Judd), blocked shots with three and points with 34, which included two three-pointers and 14 for 20 from the line. This was Nay’s second straight game with a double-double. The Bulldog’s other game of the week was played Friday in the old gym against the San Juan Broncos. The Bulldogs trailed the whole game and ended up losing 60-47. Turnovers in this game were again a thorn in the Bulldog’s side as they lost the turnover battle 25-13. The Dogs also had trouble from the charity stripe, only shooting 16 of 30 for 53%. Nay recorded his first double-double of the week with 11 rebounds and 17 points, he also had a blocked shot. Judd recorded two rebounds, one steal and seven See BULLDOGS, Page 9 Lotsa Motsa Sports Calendar Boys Basketball Fri Jan 19 Wed Jan 24 Fri Jan 26 Richfield @ Gunnison So Sevier @ Gunnison Gunnison @ Richfield Fr 5:15/JV 5:15 Var 7 pm Fr 5:15/JV 5:15 Var 7 pm Fr 5:15/JV 5:15 Var 7 pm Girls Basketball Thur Jan 18 Tue Jan 23 Thur Jan 25 Gunnison @ Richfield Gunnison @ South Sevier Richfield @ Gunnison Fr 5:15/JV 5:15 Var 7 pm Fr 5:15/JV 5:15 Var 7 pm Fr 5:15/JV 5:15 Var 7 pm Wrestling Thur Jan 18 Fri-Sat Jan 26-27 Gunnison @ Panguitch Enterprise Tournament Pizza • Calzone Breadsticks • Salad Free Delivery (Limited Area) 528-3792 57 South Main • Gunnison Happy to Serve You |
