Show I The Gunnison Valley Gazette Thursday, October 19, 2006 ESSAY WINNERS of time and money. I would rather call a friend and go shopping. Why would you want to waste money on drugs when you could buy new clothes?! There are lots of better things to do than drugs. Continued from Page 5 by WYATT JEFF OUTZEN 7th grade Fve got better things to do than to do drugs. I want to stay drug free because I don't want it to ruin my life. My main goal in life is to be drug free and be a police officer or a swat team agent and if drugs interfere with that I'm going to be furious. I know people think that they're cool doing drugs but they're not they're just plain stupid. I'm not talking Motrin or pain pills or allergy medicine. I'm talking alcohol, beer, wine, smokes and stuff like that. For example I know people may smoke to relieve stress. I know that they may do that but once you start you can never stop. My mom started smoking after I was born to relieve the stress from paying the bills and groceries and stuff parents have to pay for and now she is pretty healthy but she could never ever quit. Every day she wishes that she didn't start and she's trying to quit for my sister and me. I hope she never dies from lung cancer or anything like that. She might not and I hope she doesn't. i El 1 by MARISSA PICKETT 8th grade I have better things to do than drugs! I would rather call some friends over or watch a movie and just have fun. Drugs are a waste by JOSHUA CARLISLE 8th grade I'd bet that everyone in the world knows someone who smokes. That is hard core evidence that drugs are too widely used today. When I went to the store, I saw a line at the counter of about six or seven people. I noticed that all of them had come to buy cigarettes. Now they may think they are "just smoking", but that leads to other drugs like marijuana, heroine, and methamphetamine. Later on in their life, they are likely to try one of these drugs and they will get addicted. Now these "innocent" smokers are doing other drugs. Then they try to get their friends to join them. Soon enough, we've got half the world's adult population doing drugs- that's horrible to think about. What's even worse is that people aren't the only ones smoking. I was watching T.V. and they were showing how five monkeys in a Japanese zoo have seen so many people smoking in front of them that once they got hold of a lit cigarette, they automatically started smoking. Soon enough the monkeys started reaching out of their cages for cigarettes. They would even grab and shake people for some cigarettes. That's scary! If monkeys want to smoke just by watching complete strangers smoke, then think how big of an influence it is on kids when they watch their parents smoke. We need to find a way to stop this world-wide addiction now, because this problem is only going to get worse. by HADEN McAFEE 8th grade Did you know that there are tens of thousands of slaves in the U.S. alone? It's a fact, and that number grows daily. Doing drugs makes you a slave to your addiction. All your money goes to buying drugs, and all your time1 goes to either getting money for drugs or using drugs. You can't stop either- the addiction is so powerful that you become a fly in a spider's web with no chance to escape! Not all drugs are addictive at first, but they all are in the end. Some people are so enslaved to their drugs they end up in prison for stealing, making or abusing drugs. They waste years of their lives, but still can't stop. The slavery never ends. by AUSTIN JAMES 8th grade I don't know why all people do drugs, but I do know one true story. My mom works with this girl who has a son who drinks and smokes every day. I have asked him why he started drinking, and he said his dad got him started when he was young. Then I asked him if he thought he could stop, but he said it would probably kill him. Now I know why he does drugs. Stone's Lean I (round Beef Patties Sold In W Ib. Box - n?M ea. Western Family Grade AA Dozen Endurance $4 oz. or Reg, 32 oz. Asst Fitness Water 23.7 oz. Besides having the largest selection of sporting goods and clothing, Cabelas also gives scheduled tours, and according to Memmott, they have "quite a lot of small groups" that take guided tours through the store. They also have two conference rooms for conventions or other big gatherings. One thing Memmott said to be sure to check out is the bargain cave. "Cabelas has a 100% guarantee. All the merchandise we get back we can't resell as new even though much of it hasn't even been opened. All of it goes into the bargain cave with a big mark down, and the discounted items change in there on a daily basis." One of the favorite departments in the store is the gun library. It has all kinds of custom guns. "It is a high-end/special deal gun store," said Memmott, "Many of the guns are transferred from different Cabelas locations." There's over $200,000 of guns. "These are very expensive fire arms," said Memmott. All of the guns are for sale. Cabellas takes in trade guns, and the gun outfitters determine their worth. "We're about the only ones who do that anymore," Memmott said. Bill Bates, an outfitter in the gun library said his personal favorite is the 1923 Colt Army Single Action revolver. It looks just like a shiny silver cap gun with a white handle. "It's in spectacular condition," he said. The cost is about S1500. Memmott said by way of advice, if you want a leisurely trip through store, don't come on a weekend close to the hunting season. Mornings are best. This is an afternoon store for sure," he said, "By the afternoon things really pick up, but around 11a.m. any week day is perfect to avoid the worst crowds."
