Gene has been president of Gunnison Jaycees and the Mayfield Lion's Club. Gene and Anita have 7 children and 32 grandchildren. They are outstanding parents and grandparents. They love each of their grandchildren and their grandchildren love to spend time with them at their home or in the outdoors. They do activities such as Lake Powell trips, family camps, fishing outings or simple dinners in the mountains. Gene and Anita attend many local events, many of which they have grandchildren performing. It is not uncommon to see Gene have a grandchild sitting by him in the tractor, or Anita with kids around her on the 4-wheeIer. They also travel regularly to visit their children and grandchildren. They go to visit or to attend activities their grandchildren are involved in. Their family is very proud of them and their accomplishments. Gene is currently serving on the Gunnison Valley Hospital Board. Anita is a volunteer worker at the DUNFORDS Gunnison Valley Hospital. Gene has served in a variety of church callings which include nursery leader, primary teacher, elder's quorum president, high counsel, bishop and stake presidency counselor. Many men fondly remember Gene as their Scout Master, a position held for over 15 years. Anita has served in the primary, Sunday school, nursery and Relief Society presidency. But her fondest memories are that of cub scout leader for over 20 years. Gene can describe nmny changes that have occurred in Agriculture and in his lifestyles during his life time. "We lived in a four room adobe house until I was nearly a teenager. We had a kitchen and a living room downstairs heated by an old coal stove. The two bedrooms were upstairs with an outside fire escape ladder to get up and no heat in the upstairs. • Our bathroom was a two throne outhouse about 50 yards up the path. We took turns bathing in a #10 tin tub in the kitchen. Our refrigerator was a wet burlap over a wooden box in the shade down by the creek. Anita was raised for nearly a year in the loft of their dairy barn while her father was building a home. They walked two miles to catch the school bus, snow or shine. "Agriculture has changed tremendously in our time. When I was a young boy, we milked 4 cows, had a few chickens, pigs, horses, bees, turkeys and ducks. We raised sugar beets, alfalfa, corn, barley, oats and peas. Now our family milks 800 cows and raises alfalfa, corn and oats. Modern technology has helped us raise milk production from 3 gallons to 10 gallons per cow per day. I remember when it was a good day to harvest 5 acres of alfalfa in a day. Now 150 acres per day is not uncommon." Continued from Page 1 area, (Tempe and Chandler). She is the oldest of 7 children.
