Goldie did a wonderful, job last week and we do so appreciate her for filling in. May the good Lord bless her for her help. Elda reported that the state is cutting back on their assistance to the senior programs. She got a letter from Salt Lake and with this terrible mess the country is in right now, it looks like the older folks are going to be among the first to suffer. Elda says we need to write Senator Hatch and see if he can assist the seniors in the state. She wrote a letter to him one time and got a real nice letter back, which made her feel special. The truth is, everybody got that letter. The envelope was addressed 'Boxholder'. Elda believes to this day that she had a genuine note that was mailed directly to her from Mr. Hatch. We formed a committee to look at some of the things the club might do if we can't go anywhere. Among the ideas were scrapbooks, compiling recipes, starting a ladies double quartet, volunteering at the hospital Hayden's Turkey Living the Outdoor Lifestyle and schools and starting a the schools. That particular idea did not meet with painting class. Opal suggested the wide approval. By CRAIG PAYNE Last spring I was fortunate to be invited to share a turkey hunt with Hayden Jensen, his dad Stewart Jensen and his grandfather Amo Jensen. Hayden had drawn a hard to get turkey tag and was excited to get the hunt started. The trio set up camp near a small creek, under a canopy of cottonwood trees nestled along the far edge of a beautiful green meadow. I absolutely love the color of springtime green grass. No other shade of green can compare to the color of green grass as it pokes it's sleepy head through the melting snow. Summertime grass pales in comparison to the lush green grass of early spring. As it turned out the same green grass that drew the Jensen's to this particular camp site also drew the turkey's to the same drainage. Although the turkey's had taken up residency higher on the mountain. Hayden's hunt was well under way by the time I was able to join them and they had several bands of turkey's located. The turkey's seemed to be very active just past first light but their calling subsided dramatically as the sun rose in the eastern horizon and we were unable to hear any more calling until just prior to sunset. It became apparent to all involved that this was going to be a tough hunt. For Hayden to be successful we would need to be set up well before daylight. As the first streaks of sunshine raced westward from their eastern beginnings the woods came alive with activity. From our mahogany covered vantage Courtesy Photo Stewart and Hayden Jensen with Heyden's harvested turkey. point turkey's could be heard in all directions. North, south, east and west. Tom's gobbled and hen's yelped their seductive reply. I did my best to sound like a love sick hen turkey in need of companionship. We had one would be suitor headed our way as we watched him weave in and out of the sagebrush hastily closing the gap between us and him. We hustled to get the decoy set up and our camouflage face masks in place, then we waited. And we waited. Then we called. And then we waited some more. Then we called again. And then the unexpected happened. We called in a cow elk. She came in fast and she came in close, leaving us all to wonder why the heck my very best turkey calling would entice a cow elk to come and check us out. I still do not know. But I do know by the time the elk encounter was over the woods were again quiet. Void of all turkey sounds. We headed to camp to regroup. We decided to get back to the mahogany point well before evening and just let things happen as they will. Our plan was to listen for torn turkey's gobbling and then react to them accord- ingly. But after quite a spell on stand the only sound in the woods at all was a hen that seemed to be lost. We listened to her persistent calling as she made her way up one side of the drainage and down the other side. After a quick strategy session we decided to follow her, keeping track of her by sound rather than sight as the vegetation was too dense to see any distance at all. Our thoughts were that when she located the flock we would be in an ideal location to lure a torn into shotgun range. We followed her at a distance for about a half mile before her calling subsided. At that point we set up and started calling ourselves. The area we were in was on a steep, rocky hillside covered with thick pinon and juniper trees, directly above a small creek. And again the unexpected happened. Instead of calling in a torn turkey, we called in three. They came in with out making a sound. All in full strut, with their tails fanned out and their wings dragging the ground. What a beautiftjl sight they were. Without hesitation Hayden shouldered his trusty 20 gauge and claimed the largest of the three for himself. A fitting end to a fantastic hunt.
