The 560-acre Mountain Dell property southeast of Mt. Pleasant and due east of the Pine Creek subdivision will actually contain five “camps.” Most of the property is devoted to what will be the TIFIE Boy Scout Camp. Named for the charity that donated the $1 million that got development of the property going, it will be a standard camp where Scouts spend a week working on merit badges. Thomas Anderson Thomas Anderson and his wife, Sharon, call Gunnison home. Thomas is a veterinarian and has served in various church and community callings. He was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver award in 2005. Dr. Anderson is also known for his Dutch oven cooking and has been named “best outdoor cook.” “Whether playing the part of veterinarian, Scout leader, or bishop, Thomas Anderson has made a huge difference in the lives of so many youth,” according to his Silver Beaver citation. Mountain Dell ribbon cutting Date: June 16 Time: 5 p.m. The public is invited Directions: From U.S. 89, turn east on 700 South in Mt. Pleasant. Another camp, currently referred to as the “training center,” will offer leadership training to selected Scouts. That’s where they will go through the high-adventure Timberline (Boy Scouts) and All-Star (Varsity) curricula. The property also contains a family camp, 12 pads where families can camp for two nights in tents or RVs. And areas have been designated for two yet-to-be-developed camps: a Cub Scout day camp and an Order of the Arrow camp. While development is far from complete, the ranch will soon open. Construction crews are rushing to drill a culinary water well, fix water leaks, clear more vegetation and complete construction of as many buildings as possible before June 1, For information about scouting in Sanpete County, call the district office in Ephraim 283-6451 SUZANNE DEAN / MESSENGER PHOTO Covered rifle range at the new Mountain Dell Scout Camp will be used for rifle, shotgun and black powder shooting.
