The county was well represented, with all five fighters winning their bouts. Five of the bouts ended in knockouts or referee stoppages, two went the distance and three ended by tap-out. The first fight of the evening saw Buddy Williams from Gunnison taking on Dustin Smith. Williams had a distinct reach disadvantage, but he quickly took his opponent to the mat where he controlled the fight and won by tap-out at 1:04 in the first round. The second local to compete was Trent Edmunds of Spring City. His opponent was Jason Thompson from Lehi, and this bout went the distance, and then some. The pair duked it out for three intense rounds, not holding anything back. Appreciative fans were wondering what was keeping the fighters up. After the final bell, it was Edmunds that won the split decision 29-28, 28-29, 29-28. In the only other fight to go the distance, Dayle Jarvis of Sterling took on Dusty Winkel from Richfield. Both fighters had good followings in the gym in this rowdy matchup. Jarvis used his experience to take a slight advantage in the first two rounds, and then Winkel appeared to have a slight edge in the final round. The judges ruled Jarvis the winner 29-28 on all three cards. Sye Bunnel from Center- field landed a left hook that floored his opponent, Jason Meacham from Aurora, midway through the first round. The next Xtreme Combat event will be held on May 2, 2009, at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield, followed by a benefit night on June 20. Lady Hawks keep opponents scoreless MT PLEASANT—The Lady Hawks softball team has played two region games so far and has yet to give up a single run. The latest game came against the Carbon Dinos, and North Sanpete took care of business in a five-inning game that was shortened by the 10-run mercy rule. Junior Shelby Earl has been the hurler toeing the rubber in both shutouts, and against the Dinos she gave up just two hits, fanning eight of the 20 batters she faced. Not a single Carbon offensive player advanced beyond second base all game, while defense had only one error. North Sanpete started the game well and scored in four of the five innings played. Kara Anderson started the inning off with a bunt single that died in the dirt about five feet in front of home plate. The speedy junior outran the throw, and the rout was on. Kara was moved to second when her cousin, McKelle Anderson, earned a bunt single of her own. Alisha Peckham then rapped a single to score Kara, and Anna Ledingham hit into a fielder’s choice that sent McKelle back to the bench. With two of her teammates on base, Shelby Earl stepped to the plate, looking to help her own cause. Earl did just that, lacing a two-ball pitch over the left-field fence for a three-run Nichole Gordon sets to swing the bat against the Carbon Dinos. pop. The rest of the lineup had a chance at bat, but no further runs were scored in the inning. In the second inning, Anderson reached base on a single and moved to second on a passed ball. Alisha Peckham stepped to the plate and ripped an RBI single, and then Shelby Earl got her second hit of the game, a run-scoring single. Earl had a whopping five RBI in the game. After the scoreless third inning, the North Sanpete bats again caught fire, and with an error, a double by Peckham for her third hit of a four-hit game, a single and two walks, the Lady Hawks were able to post three runs for the inning. North Sanpete finished things off in the top of the fifth, when Kara Anderson hit a double, and then two singles (the final one by Peckham) brought Anderson across the plate to bring the mercy rule into effect. MANTI—It took extra innings for Manti’s softball team to beat the last place team in Region 12 from Salina last Tuesday 8-7, but then the Lady Templars showed what they were made of on Thursday, beating the top ranked San Juan Broncos twice, 6-1 and then 3-1. Tuesday’s game saw Manti take a four run lead in the early going, but the Wolves took advantage of six Templar errors to get back in the game. Five North Sevier runs in the top of the fifth gave the Wolves a 6-4 lead, but Manti brought two more runners across the plate to tie the game. In the eighth inning the Wolves went ahead by one before McKenzie Hatch belted one over the fence for an RBI homerun that won the game. The Thursday games, originally scheduled for Friday, were better representations of Templar talent. McKenzie Hatch pitched both games, fanning ten batters in the first and nine more in the second. In the opening game the Broncos scored first, but were shutout the rest of the game. Heavy hitting by the Templars doomed thee Broncos. Manti had 11 hits in the game including a triple by Haley Hatch and homers by McKenzie Hatch and Tauni McFarlane. The second game again saw the Broncos score first, but a triple and a homerun by Haley Hatch helped the Templars bring three runners home for the two run margin of victory.
