Show socialists again in control of city affairs on tuesday of this week the voters of eureka city elected a socialist ticket it being an overwhelming victory for this party every candidate on the socialist ticket was elected by majori maon ties ranging from 80 to over and even candidates of this party were surprised at the great number of votes which were cast for them it had been freely predicted that the citi zens zelis party would win with the socialists a close second but after the count of the votes it showed ed that only in precinct no 3 did the citizens lead and only by a very small majority precinct no 1 sho showed ed a fairly close race especially in the vote for city recorder but in no so 2 the votes were more than two to one for the socialist candidates the socialists did not have a candidate for the office of city recorder hence the fight for this position was between mrs mary stack citizen and mrs mary bigler taxpayer the latter winning by a majority in ajon t of f 97 votes mrs bigler led her ticket by more than voz votes es tae i the following figures show the vote cast in each precinct f for or each candidate and the totals for mayor no na I 1 no 2 no 3 total john morley C 94 john church S J 7 elijah bowen T 4 66 32 1 30 9 for recorder t 1 i mary A stack C 15 0 sarah A bigler T for treasurer theresa viertel 8 for councilman 4 year term joseph lee C john downey S ill E W redmond T 63 64 54 47 for councilmen 2 year term john C downey C W heber jones C 97 P J bonner C 90 H E mcclain S L H coleman S W W freckleton S william ferguson sr T 51 61 65 66 44 joseph treloar T 62 64 43 dennis harrington T 76 73 46 ELECTION NOTES 0 j even the fine summer weather 1 failed to bring out some ot of the registered voters following la Is the vote from the three precincts no 1 no 2 no 3 considerable in money 0 n e y changed hands on the election most ot of the bets were email small but in ono one instance a wager ot of 00 was made john ln received one vote for city treasurer this coming from precinct no 1 and for all we know it came from john himself although he will not admit it the commercial club luncheon was one of the pleasant affairs in connection with the election the club kept open bouse house and passed out great quantities of and coffee rol following lowing their usual custom the ladles of the M E church served a hot dinner throughout the afternoon and evening the appetizing meal was enjoyed by a large number of people the total vote for the three precincts was 1021 two years ago the continued on page 8 socialists are again in control of city affairs p continued from page 1 total was being smaller than usual on account of the influenza epidemic in the 1919 election the citizens party carried everything chairman parrish of the socialist committee the organization in charge ot of the campaign was the happiest man in eureka on tuesday night he ile says the socialist of fibers will give eureka the best ad ministration the city ever had we will fulfill our platform pledges the count in no 3 precinct was not completed until after midnight but early in the evening the other parties conce eded the election to the socialists the first authentic news of the election was flashed on the screen at the star theatre before nine clock the news brought out a liberal round of applause officers of the ladles ladies aid society of the M E church desire to extend their thanks for the very liberal manner in which eureka people pat ionized their election day dinner al so tor for the many pleasing campli ments which were heard on every hand regarding the excellent meal they also desire to thank the ladles ladies who assisted in preparing the meal after january ath eureka city will have an entirely new lot of of fibers including those who have just been elected and a marshal night watchman police judge wat ermas ier ter attorney city physician assis tant road supervisor and other minor officials already there is much speculation regarding these appoint ments and john church the new mayor says that during the past few days there have been a dozen or two applications tor for every job mrs mary stack present city re corder and whose term ot of office will expire early in january next wishes to express her appreciation to eu reka friends for the assistance given her in the past and tor for the support which she received in last tuesday tuesdays s election during the time that I 1 have held the office of city recorder I 1 have made a lot of close friends and while the work in some respects hag has been rather difficult tor for a lady to handle the city officers business men and others have been so kind and considerate that it has been a pleasure at all times and I 1 hope my successor in office will receive the same kind treatment said mrs stack |
