The first was “Who will replace the injured Jon Eastman at quarterback?” True freshman Quinn Mecham was the answer. That generated the next query, “Is he ready to play at the college level?” The answer: Yes. “He (Quinn) told me that the guys are a lot faster than anything he’s seen,” said coach Steve Coburn. “He settled down and played.” Coburn wasn’t too concerned; he knew Mecham was a winner and had confidence in the rest of the team. “Our offense can complement anything we’ve got,” he said. And complement they did. “Not because we didn’t know what he could do, but because he’d never played a college football game. He answered all our questions Friday.” “ ” Is [Quinn Mecham] ready to play [quarterback] at the college level? ... Yes! The Badgers took control early, jumping out to a 28-3 halftime lead and then coasting to a 5617 victory. North Sanpete graduate Tyson Church had 87 yards in the game and was responsible for three Badger touchdowns. “Tyson was a bit of a question mark coming in,” Coburn said. Snow’s defense was solid the whole game. “Everybody on the team played, and they still only got into the end zone once on our defense,” Coburn said. Getting the first win of the year was important to Coburn. “It gives our younger players an understanding, a baseline. I’m pleased with the outcome, but we still have a long way to go to win the conference championship.” One obstacle in the way of that goal will be Mesa Community College. The Badgers will travel to Mesa this weekend to take on a team that’s ranked 23rd in the nation. Mesa was 9-2 last year and they have a new head coach, making it tough to know what to prepare for. Coburn expects it to be “a real game.” In other NJCAA news, the Badgers will likely move up in the national rankings from their No. 4 spot. Templars win big against Union Cougars, 42-14 ROOSEVELT – For the second week in a row, the Manti Templars struck early and then dominated the rest of the game to remain undefeated. Manti’s latest victim, the Union Cougars, fell behind 42-0 before finally getting on the scoreboard against second and third string defensive players. After making a defensive stop and forcing a Union punt, Manti’s offense took the field on their own 14-yard line. On Manti’s first play of the game, Russ Hugentobler took the handoff from Griffin Aste, squirted through a hole in the line, and was off to the races for an 86 yard TD run. Manti continued to score at will, getting a one-yard dive over the center from Aste with a two-point conversion run by Hugentobler. Next, Matt Olson ran a 27-yard sweep into the end zone, followed by a two yard TD run by Callan Jones and another two-point conversion by Hugentobler. At the half, Manti held a 28-0 lead, but they were far from finished. Jones ran 92 yards to return the opening kickoff back for six more points. Robert Peterson made the PAT. Jens Howe ran another TD in from the 15 and the PAT was good again. Leading by 42 points, Coach Cole Meacham called off the dogs. Union made it into the end zone twice in the fourth quarter to make the score a little more respectable at 42-14. Defensively, Aste forced a fumble that was recovered by Seth Gergetz. Leading tacklers for the Templars were Olson, Gergetz, Nick Brown and Zach Bown. Manti’s inexperienced line was the subject of some concern in the preseason, but Meacham is pleased with their performance so far this season. Speaking of line coach Fred Taukei’aho, he said, “Fred has done a great job with them. They’ve come together really, really well.” This week the Templars will take their unblemished record to Kanab. The Cowboys struggled early against Beaver last week, but made some halftime adjustments that allowed them to earn a come-from-behind victory. Although they’re a 1A team, the Cowboys always bring their game. before the Wolves recovered a loose ball and went on a 50yard drive to go ahead 7-0 on an 8-yard run by Josh Bates. The Bulldog defense dug in to stop North Sevier’s next drive on the 28. Shawn Gubeli and Tyler Jensen got into the backfield to stymie a fourth down conversion attempt. Solid running by Heston Neal and pass completions by Cutler Frandsen to Trevor Madsen and Matthew Harris moved the Bulldogs deep into North Sevier territory. A 19yard run by Neal was stopped just short of pay dirt, but it gave Gunnison a first and goal on the 4-yard line. It looked as if the Bulldogs would tie the game, but a mishandled high snap was picked up by Evan Pettit who ran it 96 yards for another Wolf touchdown. The turnover and subsequent score changed the whole complexion of the game: Instead of being tied at 7; the Bulldogs were down by 15. The Wolves added another seven points on a 30-yard TD pass to Riley Tidlund, and the first half ended with North Sevier ahead 22-0. The second half wasn’t much kinder to Gunnison. The Bulldogs moved the ball well, especially in the first half, but untimely turnovers kept them out of the end zone and allowed the Wolves to build a 22-0 halftime lead.
