Blowing snow blamed for accident By Karen Prisbrey Staff writer FAYETTE—Police reported that blowing, drifting snow and driving too fast for existing conditions contributed to a late afternoon accident on S.R. 28 north of Fayette between a compact car and a family van. Heidie Averett, 33, of Orem was driving southbound at milepost 6 about 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21, when snow that had drifted onto the highway caused her to lose control of the car, and it slid into the path of a northbound van. Upon impact, the bumper, taillights and other debris from the car were scattered down the right side of the highway about 100 feet. The point of impact to the small car was just behind the driver’s seat, where Averett’s 10year-old son was sitting. Rescue-6, the Gunnison Fire Department emergency extrication truck, was dispatched to the scene to cut the boy free from the car. He sustained a broken left femur and was transported to the Gunnison Valley Hospital, and then LifeFlight took him to Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City for treatment. Averett and a 6-year-old child who were both riding in the front seat sustained bumps and bruises and were also transported to the Gunnison Valley Hospital for evaluation. The van, driven by Shiela Chief of Pinon, Ariz., sustained damage to the left front bumper and fender. Chief and her two children, ages 6 and 9, were uninjured in the accident. A second Gunnison ambulance was dis- patched to the scene to check the conditions of that family. Utah Highway Patrol Officer Bruce Turner, who investigated the scene, stated, “Averett was driving the speed limit, but because of the blowing drifted snow that had covered the southbound lane of traffic, she was unable to control her car. She was cited for driving too fast for existing conditions.” UDOT dispatched a snowplow to clear the snow that had blown onto the highway. Turner expressed appreciation to Gunnison Police Chief Blane Jensen and his assistant, Zack Howick for coming out to handle traffic control in the frigid weather. He also noted the quick response of the rescue and ambulance crews.
