A gentle breeze Sunday afternoon seemed to make the heat bite a little deeper into the skin, but Mondays' cloud cover helped shade the sun and almost made the air seem . cooler. Now if we can just get some moisture in the way of rain instead of humidity. Cindy and Dale Hill took a long ride on his Harley last weekend down to the Boulder mountain, back over to Fish Lake and home. .They said although it was warm the scenery was beautiful, and the natural air conditioning from riding the bike made it bearable. They enjoyed the trip until they broke down out on airport hill in 100 degree weather. Luckily they were able to get aridehome without waiting in the hot sun too long. Dale and son's Justin and Jaden went back to pick up the bike later. JULY 26, 2006—When you read this column in last week's paper did you get the feeling that it was all old news, which you'd already read once before? Well, your mind wasn't playing tricks on you. You had read it the week before. One of the newspaper computers crashed last week during the final edit, and my column died too. When they tried retrieving it, the column from the week before popped up. And now you know the rest of the story. Computers are not flawless. Maybe the heat got to the computer system too. Angela Tomkins is thrilled to announce she is a new grandma and that her parents, Gerda and Paul Caldwell have become first time great-grandparents to a beautiful baby girl bom on July 11. Little Kiersten Sophia Phelps weighed in at 7 1/2 pounds. Kiersten is the daughter of Marcie and Steve Pheips of Springville. Other grandparents are Sherman and Susan Phelps of Pleasant Grove and Henry Larsen of Boulder City. Nev. This beautiful little girl is named after her great-great-grandmother Carla Kiersten Sophia Anderson of Centerfield. Because Kiersten was born on the date 7-11, her mothers' friends at work started calling her 'Slurpy' and it stuck, now everyone has given her the nickname. Happy Birthday wishes are extended to Mark Pickett who celebrated his 80th birthday on Monday, July 24. The celebrations at Centerfield, Fayette and Mayfield always draw former residents and extended family members home to celebrate the holiday. It's nice to see that all the frills offered in the bigger cities for the holidays can't keep our children and grandchildren from coming home for good old-fashioned fun and entertainment. Please give me a call at 528-7710 and tell me who came to spend the 24th holiday with you so we can share it with others in next weeks'paper. Blaine and I will have our son Dennis, wife Staci and four of his five children here to celebrate the holiday on Sunday, July 23. Staci's mother Ila Willden of Aurora and Blaine's sister Geneva Stapley of Chester will also join us for a picnic and fireworks. We hope all our readers have a terrific celebration too. Annette Dyreng, secretary at the Gunnison Valley High School called me last week to announce that Bulldog jackets and shirts will be available for purchase again this year to the public. This is not a fund raiser for the school, but a service to parents and boosters who would like to have Bulldog apparel. The deadline to order is Aug. 11. Annette will be available at the high school after Aug. 1 if you are interested and would like to have more information. AXTELL ACTION BY AUDREY BDDRE: 5ZB-33D9 AXTELL—This week of July 17, 2006 has been a rough week for the Goff families, with Glen getting smashed by a cow critter hitting a gate into him. He had to have stitches in his head (looks like he has a third eye brow) and broken nose which he will have some corrective surgery later this week. Get well wishes to Glen. On Thursday, at the Nancy and Chris Goff, home a fire started while all the family was gone except the little dog. Nancy's sister, Debra was out in her yard and saw the smoke and called the Gunnison Fire Department. There is a lot of smoke and soot damage to the house, and the firemen got the little dog out safely. Nancy, Chris and boys are staying with Karl andJDebra until the repairs can be made to their house. Nicole Mecham played soft ball on the Gunnison Fox team and placed first in the Ephraim Lions Tourney last week. Jodee Hartley and Danielle Boore played on the younger girls team at the Ephraim Lions Tourney also. With all the flooding in the Gunnison area Thursday July 13, out Axtell way we only got a trace of rain, along with the wind. Bryant Davis and Allen Boore played on the 14-15 year old boys team in the Babe Ruth Utah South Tournament last week in Panquitch, Utah and came home as champions. They are playing this week in The Babe Ruth State-wide Tournament held in Taylorsville. They won the first game played Saturday July 15. The next game is Monday evening in Taylorsville. Kolten Christiansen, Tyrell Hansen, Allen Boore, and Ben Boore spent last week*at the Varsity Scout Camp on Skyline Drive. The annual Axtell 24th of July Dinner and Program was held July 22 at Anthony's Flat up Willow Creek. Games for the younger people were played before dinner. The Axtell Young Women were in charge of the games. Dinner was served by the Axtell activities committee. After dinner there was a short program, with Elwood Sorenson giving the history of some of the names of the roads and places on Willow Creek. Some of the flats are named after families that would take their families and livestock, milk cows and such and graze them in the higher canyon flats where more feed was available and cooler for the women and children. Once a week the butter and cheese would be brought down by the older children or farther to trade at the local store for supplies that had to be bought. From the history of Axtell: In 1878 the Willow Creek people were called to built a sawmill on Mill Creek in Willow Creek Canyon. Red pine timber was of such excellent quality that it was worth the extra cost to haul it to Manti to be used in the Temple, This year the Willow Creek Pioneer Walking Stick was presented to Leland Sorenson. He has lived in Axtell all of his life except when he was in the military during World War II. Fanning has been his way of life until recent years when he sold his farm. Leland married a Redmond girl, Donna Vee Jensen. They have one son, Steve, who with his family live in Kanab, Utah. Congratulations to Leland, who is a quite person, who is always helping family and friends and sharing from his garden. Thank you to the Activity Committee, the Young Women and everyone who helped in any way, and by coming and enjoying the party. It was a lovely evening in the mountain setting to pay a tribute to our Pioneer Heritage. Past Axtell Pioneer recipients are Dean Anderson, Elwood Sorenson and Richard Cowley. Welcome to Jessie and Para Sterling and young daughter to Axtell. They have bought the Tad Lee home. Axtell will be losing a long time building, the Axtell Ward Church, with the building of a new one starting the first of August. The old building was built around 1910 and used as a school and church building. In later years the school was moved to Centerfield and the building used for church. This history information has been compiled from the Church History files and by Phyllis Cowley for the Relief Society Sesquicentcnnial, 1917 to 1192. Matilda Bundesen Whitlock was called as the first Relief Society President of the Axtell Ward in 1917 and served until her death which was May 30,1929. Her counselor was Matilda Jensen and secretary was Johanna Olsen. These sisters were instrumental in getting the first piano and first chairs in the ward. Other duties they were called to do was go into the homes and care for the sick, wash and lay out the dead, make the burial clothes and arrange to have someone sit up at night with the dead body, keeping ice around it and preserving it as nicely as possible until the burial. They also were responsible to collect the Sunday eggs and receive the Relief Society wheat. Mrs. Whitlock was the mother of 11 children, one stillborn. Her children never remember seeing their mother in a short dress. She always wore a long dress with a tic apron that was always fresh and clean. If anyone has a special remembrance about the Axtell Ward Church please call me at 528-3309 so we can collect as much history as possible. I have collected quite a lot of the older Axtell history so would like to add anything you forward to me to add to what I have. I have worked on this history off and on for many years and some day hope to get it all compiled together. -2 col.- ADVERTISE HERE!
