Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black Wednesday, August 31, 2005 Fair (Continued from A1) was well attended, but attendance was smaller than usual on Friday, probably because of high school football games around the county. She said both audience and participants considered the cowboy poetry concert to be the best ever, with attendance higher than in the past. Pre-sale carnival ticket sales were significantly higher. The popular Willie-the-Clown class was well attended. The popularity of the Dutch oven feast grows every year. Ten great cooks prepared a variety of main and/or dessert dishes for more than 75 eager diners. Exhibits were down in both the small animal and general exhibition buildings, and there were fewer participants in the car show this year. Hatch speculated that exhibition numbers may have been low because of higher fuel costs, which most certainly affected the car show and may also have had something to do with people not traveling from outlying areas to bring entries for exhibit. Fair board member Kay Robbins was pleased with the quality of the tractor show. The tractor pull exhibition was well received by a small but appreciative audience. He explained that attendance for this event is not usually as large as they would like because they have to hold it on Friday morning since the grounds are tied up at other times with preparations for the rodeo and horse pull. The success of any county fair is centered in the people: those who work tirelessly for weeks to organize and plan, the exhibitors and performers who create the entertainment, merchants who contribute prizes and means, and the hundreds of folks who just attend and enjoy the fair. The Sanpete County Fair Board offers thanks to all of these people for another successful fair season. There were two close calls during the derby. Jason Ogden had to be extricated from his crushed vehicle but escaped with a minor concussion. Dale Jarvis’s quick reaction time enabled him to escape his car without serious injury when it caught fire. In both cases, firefighters and EMTs leaped into action to prevent and minimize harm. Taking away pre-derby cash prizes were Robby Layton, who got the special award; Aaron Parry, Ephraim, for the best looking vehicle, and Danny Ogden, Richfield, for the most unusual car. Jr. livestock show is not child’s play MANTI—Preparing an animal for show at the Sanpete County Fair is not child’s play for young 4-H members. Besides going to workshops to learn the how-tos of showing and fitting, these young farmers must get down and get dirty to clean their animal for the Junior Livestock Show and Sale. This work pays off, however, when exhibitors leave the show ring with hefty checks from the buyers of their 4-H projects. This year’s Sanpete County Junior Livestock Show and Sale grand champions are Chelsea Hansen for her 258pound swine bought by the Gunnison Boosters and the Sanpete County Commissioners; Ryan Jackson for his 1325pound beef bought by Zions Bank; and Ashley Soper for her 140-pound swine, also bought by Zions Bank.
