School Briefs Nan Allsen, a library teacher at North Sanpete High School, recently returned from completing an educator’s fellowship to study jaguars, maned wolves and other endangered species in Emas National Park in central Brazil. The Ford Motor Company Fund and the Schaub Endowment sponsored Allsen on the expedition, which was coordinated through Earthwatch Institute. While on this expedition, Allsen, along with eight other EarthWatch volunteers, was trained in radio telemetry, triangulation, and research data entry. The volunteers spent their days monitoring live traps and collecting various census data. Allsen had the opportunity to be part of the trapping of a female giant armadillo. This was a rare experience for all the researchers, and it gave them a chance to radio tag this endangered species to monitor its behavior. Earthwatch Institute is a leader in the field of experiential education providing opportunities in the field and online for volunteers throughout the world. Sanpete district plans to participate in state program to assist struggling readers Publisher Tues: 7 p.m., Snow College Greenwood Student Center, upstairs Fri: 7 p.m. Manti 450 S. 600 W. GUNNISON VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL The South Sanpete School District is applying to participate in a statewide project designed to help struggling readers in rural elementary and middle schools. The effort is being funded by a $700,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, helped secure congressional funding for the project. Lynne Greenwood, reading specialist for the Utah State Office of Education, said each elementary and middle school in rural districts is eligible to nominate one teacher. In a few cases, two teachers from a school may participate. The capacity of the program is about 100 teachers. Selected teachers will attend six training sessions during the 2005-06 school year. Sessions will run 1-3 days, and different sessions will be held in different locations around the state, including Salt Lake City, Ogden and St. George. For each of the sessions, USOE will bring in a national expert in some aspect of reading instruction, Greenwood said. Many of the sessions will include observations at schools where some of the methods described in the training sessions are being implemented.
