Pleasant. She was born in Fountain Green on June 26, 1915 to Alfred and Katie Johnson. When she was a year and a half old, the family moved closer to Mt. Pleasant where Bernice has spent her life. “My parents had a ranch and we raised sheep,” Bernice said. The second oldest of six children, Bernice had one older brother, Lofton. “It was hard growing up,” Bernice said. “We lived so far away from town. In those days we had to drive a buggy to school.” “My mom had me help in the house some of the time,” Bernice said, “but I mainly worked outside. We had to work all the time. There were sheep to herd and we had to help put up the hay.” Her housework included washing dishes, sweeping the floor and making the beds. “Going to school was how we socialized,” Coats said. “That and visiting with the neighbors.” Luckily one of the neighbor families had a son, Grant Coates. Grant and Bernice fell in love and were married in Salt Lake City on Feb. 20 1935. “It was the first time I had ever been up to Salt Lake,” Bernice said. “We didn’t do much traveling in those days. No one went too far from home.” The Coates made their home in Mt. Pleasant and are the parents of two children. At almost 90, Bernice is still up, active and making important contributions, according to John Shuhmann, Mt. Pleasant Senior Citizen Center administrator. She is on the Senior Citizen board and adds a great deal to the workings of the Mt. Pleasant program. “I do a lot of quilting and I tend to the Senior Citizen meetings,” Bernice said. “It is a good place for people to go and have outing. It keeps us busy.” Activities Moroni Seniors will go on a shopping trip to Provo Feb. 7 at 9:30 a.m. Donations for gas are welcome. The monthly Blood Sugar Clinic is Feb. 8, from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
