Show lower rate on bullion effective august alth mine operators of utah will be saved approximately per annum and the production of lead will probably be materially increased in the state as a result of word re calved last that a reduction Is to be made probably effective august alth on the tal rate on bullion H W ma manager of the traffic service bureau of utah who represented the utah chapter of the american mining congress in the hearings which resulted in the ac tion was informed last saturday by F p H houghton freight traffic manager of the atchison Atch lson topeka santa fe railroad that the eastern carriers had agreed to join the west ern transcontinental carriers in the publication of rates which will re I 1 duce the charges on eastbound bul lion from 22 per ton to 16 50 per ton wiping out the one third in crease put into effect slightly less than two years ago A G mackenzie secretary of the utah chapter of the american min ing congress states that it is ex pecked that the utah smelters which increased their charges when the rate was raised will pass to the ore producers the reduction now in eight sight the saving which will be et ef fectea to the mine operators will average approximately 60 cents a ton according to mr mackenzie exclusive of the production ot of the utah copper company which was not considered in the case because of special circumstances surrounding its handling of both its ore and its bullion utah produced 1 tons of ore in 1920 at a saving of 60 cents a ton on this ore the total would be the promised reduction Is held to be most vital to the industry both because of the saving which will be effected and in view of its import ance as a step toward the tion of a much greater output of ore especially from the lead producers mr mackenzie mr and walter fitch sr presented tha the plea of the mine operators tor for the reduction in bullion rates to the central freight committee of the car biers in chicago december of last year at that time evidence was presented to show the stifling effect upon mining which the existing rates had demonstrated |
