Show silver ve r city man advertising matter on utah J 11 mcshane silver city rail road man has just published tor for wide distribution the following story regarding the thit opportunities of utah to those interested in develon developing ang utah the vast resources of utah heretofore hardly touched ambrase every known product among the metals coals undeveloped timber water power oil and gas agricultural and ive live stock and many other un touche el 1 industrial possibilities yet to be had in utah the last and seemingly most at tor for the geological expert is the vast oil and gas possibilities in utah there is known to exist the largest structures indicative of oil that have yet been found in the en tire united states at this time some of the strongest oil companies are drilling at various locations in the southern part of the state at distances from rail facilities of from 36 to miles the cost of transporting the heavy oil well outfits such great distances from railroad points Is very expensive for the undertaking of the wild cat proposition for the wildcat feature Is not eliminated until actual pro Is had most of that part of utah that is now being invaded by the oil pros Is well outside the basin country that presents the only andl in the form of structures and the absence of domes indicating gas pressures have so tar far not been found outside of the basin country the old lake bonneville basin country Is now tilled filled with most per fact gas domes some structures also evist in the basin country taking hat that part of the old bonneville lake bed ed which extends irregularly south of the juab county line and as far south as the north washington county line with particular mention of escalante valley the formation of the railroad well at lund utah the official log shows an elevation of feet the well being sunk to feet or a of feet the formations were feet of clay and blue sticky shale then alternating with clay shale and sand until a depth oi of feet was reached then a stratum of lime 18 feet thick with strata of clay and shale sand and sandstone etc with the bottom of the well at feet depth in gravel and conglomerate of blue clay southwest from lund Is the siding on the salt lake route called sahara which Is slightly higher than the lund location sahara being feet in elevation and represent ing a very noticeable dome like swell in the valley still further southwest about five miles la Is the station of beryl the railroad well at beryl being only feet deep was sunk from an elevation of feet to feet the formations be ing surface clay with clay and gravel to the depth of 70 feet with altermat alt ernat ing strata of clay and gravel to the depth of feet with a 28 toot foot stratum of blue clay the last ten feet being in clay and shale the lime stratum 18 feet thick would naturally be expected at this location to be at a depth of about feet and would come under sahara at t depth of about feet this sahara swell or dome resembles the famous spindle E top dome just south of beaumont texas and which haa has been such a prodie ing dome since 1900 escalante valley being broad with easy drain age in a southerly direction has but few swells among which the sahara swell is the most prominent and noticeable and the logs ot of the low wells on either side ot of the dome one at lund and the other at beryl check almost identically with the of facial logs given of the oil producing wells ol 01 toyah texas and in the pecos basin of texas and the log from that field Is called the TWIN log of the tampico mexico field peculiar as it may seem yet true thus tar far most of the domes and oil structures thus tar far developed and producing are formed through the combination of drainage from coal beds decayed vegetation and woods and leaching of soils and rock of various content which contribute to the forming of oil and gas therefore are located in gravity or drainage below such known conditions that contribute towards the oil tures the sahara swell or dome as we may call it Is directly across the valley westward from the entrance into the valley of drainage that flows westward from the coal mountains just east of cedar city drains across cedar valley and into escalante val ley along the north side of iron butte and turns south toward the santa clara creek which acts as the drainage outlet of the valley be tween the entrance of pf this drainage on the east side of the valley and the sahara dome somewhere about township 34 south range 16 west there was noticeable not many years ago an old excavation which ex posed a vein of coal formed gerpen in a shale like formation evidently some coal had at one time taken from this for domestic use of the residents of that country taking into consideration the the drainage feature from the coal beds east of cedar city the coal vein in the valley the dome and its tor for matlon mation the fact that this part of the valley at one time was held with in the dixie oil reserve the topo graphic resemblance with oil pro sections of texas oklahoma and wyoming and the transports tran tion facilities crossing the dome la Is it not strange that drilling Is not in progress on the sahara dome where the wild cat feature would be less expensive from the beginning with the possibility of reaching the lower sands at a more rea depths with the 18 foot stratum of lime the sahara dome at an approximate depth of feet it Is quite possible that the swell indicating gas pres sure would bring this lime nearer the surface and in such case it would then be figured that the pres sure Is of great magnitude and the feet of clay shale and gravel which underlies this lime iff the bund lund well might be of great thick ness and at adv rate would be de upon to be with a lime of still greater thickness as depth would assure and which would ot of course provide the cap rock tor for the pressure of the valley in this valley there Is also con sid erable water pres pressure sare rising ne near the surface which Is accounted tor for by the early bonneville lake drain age in that part of the basin being through the santa clara creek to ward the south which the early topo graphy would indicate to be a deep rugged creek at this later time the outlet through this creek is very slow and the creek drainage or walls being very shallow would cause the pool to form in the south end of the valley bringing the water to near the surface the mountain pressure being great enough would cause thy the pressures from beneath the lime tor for lations to develop swells or domes at various locations in the valley summing up the formations as given topography or of the country coal locations ard drainage there from into this valley the disappear ance of the old bonneville lake from this valley followed by the soils forming above the first lime formation found it re mains not altogether a problematical theory that the lime capping of all the pressure might be below the water strata in the valley which will bo be found at some unknown depth below the clay and blue shale that Is formed beneath the first lime the depth at which this cap lime or bed ding plane Is found beneath the first lime will indicate the thickness of the sand below such cap lime other wise known as ahe he upper cretaceous and the lower or pennsylvania tor for nations which are oil bearing in the domes where found many locations for oil prospecting have been granted in the state of utah within the last year and while they began in the san juan field have covered most of the san rafael circle cliff country and as far west as points directly south of cedar city no locations have yet been made in the escalante valley of which this report gives a description a little exha exhaustive stive yet complete this report Is submitted to the better learned for examination and promotion of 0 the development of a field near a transportation line favorably located otherwise and which merit at least an expert examination and report on findings all available information cheerful ly furnished by J M mcshane silver city utah |
