Show Page 6 The Ogden Valley News Volume XXX Issue VI November 1, 2023 Announcements Obituaries Shirley Harris Layton March 16, 1924 ~ October 14, 2023 Shirley Harris Layton, 99, passed away on October 14, 2023. She was born March 16, 1924 in Harrisville, Utah, the only daughter of Martin H. and Vila Eames Harris. She had two older brothers, Robert and Douglas Harris. Of course, she was the apple of her father’s eye. She grew up on a farm and according to her, she worked from sunup to sundown. She lived through the Great Depression and always told her children about the year they did not get a Christmas tree because they were $1.00. It was a hard life, but a great one and living on a farm, they always had plenty to eat. Shirley attended Weber High School from 1939 to 1942. During her senior year, on December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was bombed; thus, changing lives across the world. After her graduation, most of the boys in her class went to war, and most of the girls went to work at Hill Air Force Base to fill in for all the men who were gone. The war ended in 1945, and that summer Steven Kent Ochsenbein January 29, 1954 ~ October 9, 2023 Steve was born in Ogden, Utah, to Sherman and Janine Ochsenbein. In 1978, his mother opened J&S Harvest Health Foods. Steven worked Steven Ochsenbein there until eventually purchasing the store and renaming it Steve and Irina’s Down to Earth. Steve married his late wife Irina in 2011 and acquired the store shortly after. He loved working in the health food industry, stating, “I like helping people.” He truly believed in organic foods and supplementation as a way of life. Steve fathered two children, Daniel and Angela. He is survived by Angela; son-in-law Brian; and grandson Colin Thompson. Steve loved his visits with friends and family and looked forward to seeing Colin’s smile, hearing his laugh, and tickling his feet. His family and customers adored Steve. He enjoyed hiking with his daughter, gardening, and working at his store. In his younger years, he spent countless Saturdays on the slopes with his children at she met the love of her life, Jesse Graham Layton, at Como Springs in Morgan, Utah where the returning soldiers and the girls who wanted to meet soldiers hung out. Mom and dad were married January 23, 1946 in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived in Clearfield, Utah and in 1954 purchased a small farm and moved to Huntsville, Utah where she lived for almost 70 years. Mom had a strong testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served many years in different callings in the Relief Society, Primary, and Young Women. She was loved by so many people and served those around her for years. Her most recent calling was the Young Women Secretary at the age of 90. In 1985, Mom and Dad served as one of the first missionaries in the Nigeria, Africa mission. Shirley is survived by her children Kathy (Ron) Johansen, Huntsville; Val Toone Layton, Lander, Wyoming; Connie Layton (daughterin-law); Rodney (Teresa) Layton, Huntsville; and Bradley (Cathie) Layton, Huntsville. She is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 67 greatgrandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Graham; son, Scott Harris Layton; grandson, Erik Jay Johansen; and great-granddaughter, Berklee Taylor Johansen. Funeral services were held Friday, October 20, 2023 at the Huntsville First Ward, 277 S. 7400 E., Huntsville, Utah. Interment, Huntsville Town Cemetery. Condolences may be share with the family at lindquistmortuary.com November 27, 1949 ~ October 19, 2023 Our loving wife, mother, nana, and sister, Mary Ann Brown Holmes, crossed the separating line peacefully on October 19, 2023 at the age of 73. Mary Ann Holmes She was an independent, strong, vibrant, and loving woman. Mary Ann was born in Ogden, Utah to Jean Crockett and John Edward Brown on November 27, 1949. She has two sisters, Martsie (Spencer) and Barbara (Lindeman). Mary Ann attended Ogden High School, class of ‘67. She attended Utah State University for one year before transferring to Weber State University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education while being a part of the LaDianada Sorority. She began teaching at Lewis Elementary School before returning to get her Master’s degree in Family Studies and Child Development at Michigan State University. She resumed teaching at Ogden High School and Weber State University. After 14 years as an educator, she returned to Utah State University to receive her administrative degree. After graduation, Mary Ann was an assistant principal at Ben Lomond High School and later became a principal at Horace Mann Elementary. As principal, Mary Ann implemented the Reading Renaissance Program and traveled throughout the United States as an Ambassador for Accelerated Reader. In 2000, she was presented the Mattie Wattis Harris Spirit of the Snowbasin. Her love for her students made for a passionate and successful career, wanting to create the best environment for students to learn. Mary Ann met the love of her life, Vern W. Holmes, in the spring of 1982. The couple married November 12, 1982 in the Ogden Temple. Together, they had four amazing boys: Nate, Tyler, Chase, and Zach. After making West Haven their home for 20 years, Mary Ann and her family moved to Farr West. As a retired couple, they shared time between Farr West and St George, Utah. Throughout her life, Mary Ann had many hobbies. She enjoyed playing tennis, softball, skiing, watching Michigan State University sports, quilting, traveling, reading, researching family history, and teaching in various church callings. For several years, Mary Ann was a ski instructor at Powder Mountain. She traveled to many places throughout her years, with one of her favorite places being James and Paula Whittaker’s ranch in Leadore, Idaho. Later in life, her favorite pastimes were watching online court and attending church meetings. Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Vern W. Holmes; three sons, Nathan (Christie) Holmes, Tyler Holmes, and Chase (Andie) Holmes; four grandkids; and sister Barbara (Carl) Lindeman. She is preceded in death by her son Zach Holmes, parents John and Jean Brown, sister Martsie Spencer, and other loved relatives. Funeral services were held October 27 at the Farr West LDS chapel. Interment at Ogden City Cemetery. A special thanks to Tyler Holmes (son) for his continued care, compassion, patience, and support during the last few years. It begins with the Santa Run at 4:30 p.m. and the parade at 5:30 p.m. We need a little over a hundred volunteers to help make this magical night a great success. Everyone is welcome; however, children under 16 cannot volunteer, but can accompany an adult as a “helper.” Are you a local business, a family, or a local organization? If you answered yes, get your group together to register now! Here is what we need help with: • You will be volunteering to help keep parade spectators on the sidewalk and out of the street or to walk with a 昀氀oat, also helping to keep spectators safe. • If you volunteer, please commit to showing up at 3:00 p.m. and plan on staying until 7:00 p.m. Volunteers need to be able to stand for long periods of time, walk multiple city weather conditions. • Volunteers will check in at 3:00 p.m. at the Ogden Amphitheater, 353 Historic 25th Street, A complimentary volunteer sweatshirt, re昀氀ective vest, and a 昀氀ag will be provided. • You will take your post on the street or with a 昀氀oat between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m. The Santa Run starts at 4:30 p.m. and the parade at 5:30 p.m. sharp.
