According to DEQ, harmful algal blooms (HABs) can produce dangerous toxins that pose serious health risks to humans, pets, and livestock. These blooms develop when naturally Weber County began installing wayfinding signage on August 26 as a recreation amenity to provide safe, quality, and easily accessible guidance for visitors and the community on state and county roads. Wayfinding signage is supported by the Ogden Valley General Plan (Pg. 7). In 2017, the Weber County Commissioners directed staff to begin implementing this plan directive. These installed signs bring that plan directive to fruition. “The Ogden Valley General Plan clearly tells us to balance the quantity of recreational experiences available in the valley with quality,” Charles Ewert, principal planner, Weber County, said. “These wayfinding signs are intended to not only direct visitors to their desired destination, they do it in a manner that communicates that this is a place willing to invest in itself for the sake of the visitor’s experience. It should also be noted for local residents that the direct and affirmative guidance of the in-person signs will help reduce nonlocal traffic in residential areas in ways that GPS can occasionally fail to do.” The size of the signs was non-negotiable by the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT). The relationship between the size and spacing of sign lettering, vehicle speed, and their relationship to human response time were factors in determining the minimum mandatory size of the signs. These requirements enhance sign legibility and the safety of drivers. “Wayfinding is a placemaking initiative that provides a strategy to connect people to places of interest. It helps keep visitors on the routes intended for them, provides a sense of security that they are on the right track, and educates them on other area amenities, attractions, and businesses that they may not have previously been aware of, enhancing the economic opportunity associated with their visit,” Sara Toliver, president/CEO, Visit Ogden, said. The style of the signs was approved by the Weber County Commission in 2018 after extensive design review. The design review committee included individuals from UDOT, the United States Forrest Service, the Weber County Commission, the Ogden Valley Planning Commission, Ogden-Weber Visitors Bureau, and the town of Huntsville, among others.
