Show Volume XXX Issue XIII The Ogden Valley News Page 11 September 15, 2023 God Bless America, i.e., God Bless the U.S. Constitution ground, stay actively engaged in ensuring the By Shanna Francis September 17 is Constitution Day, which is observed in 50 American states. It was established to commemorate the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by thirty-nine men—our Founding Fathers—on September 17, 1787. According to constitution.com, “The delegates to the Constitutional Convention met for the last time to sign the document they had created. We encourage all Americans to observe this important day in our nation’s history by attending local events in your area. Celebrate Constitution Day through activities, learning, parades, and demonstrations of our love for the United States of America and the blessings of freedom our Founding Fathers secured for us.” The U.S. Constitution was the first written constitution in the world. Utahn Dallin H. Oaks, who studied law at the University of Chicago, was a law clerk for Chief Justice Earl Warren of the U.S. Supreme Court, and considered twice for nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court—first in 1975 by Gerald Ford and again in 1981 by Ronald Reagan—stated in 1992 that the U.S. Constitution has served the people of America well. “After two centuries, every nation in the world, except six [as noted in 1992] has adopted written constitutions, and the U.S. Constitution was a model for all of them.” He then admonished, “Those who enjoy the blessings of liberty under a divinely inspired constitution [as its founders held] should practice what the Founding Fathers called ‘civic virtue.’” Oliver DeMille writes in his book Freedom Shift, “Arguably the most important document for freedom ever created by mankind was established and ratified by those who supported the U.S. Constitution. The second deepest freedom analysis of government was provided by their enemies, the anti-Federalists. This opposing group knew that no matter what a constitution says... the people simply must stay actively involved or they will inevitably see their freedoms decline.” In other words, they must continue to practice this civic virtue. It is imperative that American citizens, young and old, of every race and cultural back- U.S. Constitution is upheld and the freedoms guaranteed by it are protected and preserved. This responsibility involves an educated citizenry not swayed by propaganda, popular passing fads and movements, or the latest opposing ideology. It depends on a sound understanding of the foundational intent and meaning of this inspired document. DeMille adds, “Like Gladstone, I believe that the U.S. Constitution is ‘the greatest work ever struck off by the mind and purpose of man.’ Even with its notable flaws—especially slavery—it actually provided for the fixing of these flaws. The U.S. Constitution, both directly and indirectly, is responsible for the freedom of more people than any other government document in the world’s history,” despite any of its perceived flaws. America’s system of government is an amazing phenomenon in the vast pantheon of governmental organization and delivery among all others found through the history of humanity. Its guiding principles were inspired by God, and are unique, developed for the blessing of mankind. Today, there are pressures as never seen before in our history to destroy this inspired form of government that the U.S. Constitution outlines. If the people let it fail, the last bastion of true freedom in the world dies with it. Do all you can to learn the fundamental principles our nation and her freedoms were built upon. Educate and prepare yourselves and your children to take an active part in civic affairs. Study the original intent of our nation’s Founding Fathers and the miraculous Constitution they established, and then stand ready to defend it at every turn with all your mind and might. Make Constitution Day a day full of gratitude that you are an American with all the rights, privileges, and blessings granted under the U.S. Constitution, then work to protect and defend these blessings every day of the year— for yourself, your family, your neighbor, and your posterity. God bless the U.S. Constitution—the foundation of a free America. GREAT BASIN cont. from page 1 they would experience on an actual search.
