Banned Books Week Begins October 1 The Ogden Valley branch library will celebrate Banned Books Week all month long through the “Book in a Jar” program going on from October 1 to October 31. Come into the library and guess which banned or challenged book is in the jar for a prize. Banned Books Week is an opportunity for the American Library Association to promote the freedom to read while allowing the organization to spotlight current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. The theme for Banned Books Week 2023 is “Let Freedom Read.” This 41-year-old program typically occurs the last week of September and was created in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of book challenges. According to the American Library Association (ALA), Banned Books Week “…allows for the shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.” The ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom has noted an unprecedented number of attempts to ban books—a total of 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources in 2022, which is the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship and nearly double the 729 book challenges reported in 2021.
