On May 1, nearly a month and a half since Park City High School graduate Wyatt Pike released his debut single “Best for You,” the singer-songwriter will release his first EP, “Brand New Boy.” Pike said he’s looking forward to have people hear the album, which can be preordered now at ffm.to/brandnewboy, “It’s nerve wracking but exciting, because I think I’ve been pretty sealed off of showing what I actually feel by putting on a face to fit any given scenario I’m in,” he said. “With these five songs, I decided to write exactly what I’m thinking, exactly what I’m feeling with the least amount of filter as possible.” In addition to “Best for You,” which Pike wrote about his sister, the other songs include “Friday Nights,” “Because of Me,” “Voicemail” and “Deeper into Love.” With the exception of “Best for You,” the other songs were written within the past eight months, Pike said. “I think the songs narrate my entire life pretty well, even though they are based on experiences that have happened in the last year,” he said. “The themes are pretty consistent and make up a picture of me.” “Friday Nights” is about Pike’s senior year of high school. “It is about how I was coming to terms with my anxiety and not wanting to do things with my friends,” he said. “That’s something I’ve struggled with my whole life.” “Because of Me” and “Voicemail” draw from relationships, Pike said. “I try not to write too many PHOTO BY BLAKE BEKKEN Park City-based singer and songwriter Wyatt Pike will release his debut album, “Brand New Boy,” a fivesong EP on May 1. love songs, but the songs are about screwing something up and trying to piece things back together,” he said. Pike wrote “Deeper into Love” two days before he entered the studio because he needed one more song for the album. “I thought I was writing about someone else for someone else, but I realized halfway through the writing that the ‘You’ in the lyrics flips back and forth between me and the other person I was writing about,” he said. The song also provided the title of the EP, Pike said. “The lyrics end with ‘... happy as this brand new boy,’ and when I wrote them, I knew that’s what the record would be called,” he said. Pike started recording scratch tracks of the songs in his room before heading to Pale Horse Sound, a recording studio in Sugar House, on Feb. 5, when he began tracking the instruments. “We started with the drums, The L.A.
