Joanie lived an adventurous life, coming to Park City after living in California. Park City quickly became her home as she loved the mountain lifestyle. She met the “love of her life,” Steve Simchen and they were together for over 25 years. They spent time on their Sea-Doos at the lake and camped any chance that they could. Joanie also loved to cook, and was very good at it – she bragged about the meal that was being served and was proud to share meals with family and friends. She loved hanging out by the pool and Joan Shirey frequently initiated a BBQ to celebrate anything, but mostly life. Her porch was a favorite spot with flowers always being tended to. She was recognized by one of her employers as “Employee of the Year.” This was a direct result of her excellent customer service skills. Joanie is survived by her life partner Steve Simchen, his mother Sandy Heppentstall, Joanie’s son Jason Shirey in California, granddaughter Raya Shirey also in California. Joanie’s parents both proceeded her in death, and were loved dearly by her. Joanie wanted to live life to the fullest and did so until cancer took her breath away. If you would like to make a donation in Joanie’s name, the American Cancer Society would greatly appreciate it. Bishop decides not to enter Utah’s gubernatorial race Longtime US Rep. says he is ‘too old’ to stay in politics ASSOCIATED PRESS SALT LAKE CITY — Republican U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop said Monday he won’t run for Utah governor. He told the Deseret News that he is “too old” at 68 to run for another office, and he doesn’t need to be governor to “validate my feeling of self worth.” Bishop instead endorsed former Utah GOP Chairman Thomas Wright, one of several Republicans vying for the job in a crowded field that also includes former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman Jr. and Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox. Republican Gov. Gary Herbert is not running for reelection. Wright fit the bill of a can- didate who is “very strong in coming up with creative, pragmatic solutions that had to be based on conservative, constitutional principles,” Bishop said. Bishop pledged not to run for a ninth term in northern Utah’s 1st Congressional District because he wouldn’t have been able to continue as chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee beyond 2020 under congressional term limits. Embattled University of Utah hires new police chief ParkRecord.com/placead U. of Dayton’s top cop takes reins in wake of tragedies ASSOCIATED PRESS TRY TRANSIT WEEK RIDE TRANSIT FREE HOT DRINKS AND SNACKS SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah has hired a new police chief to run the university’s Department of Public Safety. KSL-TV reports Rodney Chatman was named chief of police Thursday and is expected to begin his position in Salt Lake City Feb. 17. University officials say Chatman currently runs the campus police department at the University of Dayton in Ohio. The university hired an outside search firm, which considered more than 50 applicants before presenting 14 candidates to the school’s search committee. Chatman was chosen from three finalists. Chatman succeeds former chief Dale Brophy, who retired in October after serving in the role since 2015. The university has faced criticism for the state of student safety after the October 2018 death of student Lauren McCluskey, who was shot on campus. The university has made efforts to improve safety through new policies and the hiring of Marlon C. Lynch as chief safety officer in December. LOOKING FOR A JOB?
