Though South Summit held Morgan to two offensive points in the first quarter, the second quarter is where it all fell apart, as the Wildcats gave up 27 more points in 12 minutes. It was a down season for the Wildcats. After winning their second consecutive state title last season, South Summit entered this year with a new coach and a young squad. They started the season 2-2, including a 26-0 victory over cross-county rival North Summit but went on to lose four of their next five games before entering the playoffs. During that stretch South Summit defeated Judge Memorial 49-0 and appeared to be turning the corner, but after 12 players were removed from the program after being caught vaping on a school bus, the Wildcats’ shrunken roster exacerbated their struggles against bigger and more experienced opponents. NORTH SUMMIT FOOTBALL (6-4, 4-1 North — No. 7 in 2A) Results: Lost 21-11 to No. 10 North Sevier last Friday Recap: Earlier in the year, North Summit was dismantled 47-20 by North Sevier in the third week of the season. But a rematch in the first round of the 2A state playoffs gave the Braves the opportunity to see how far they’ve come in the season, particularly considering they were on a four-game winning streak entering the postseason. The game plan didn’t go as planned, though, as North Summit was eliminated by North Sevier in its 21-11 loss last Friday. Still, the Braves finished with their most wins since 2015. They finished second in the North Region, including a 4-1 region record and 4-1 away from the North Summit home field, all after going winless last season. It’s something that we only practice, but coach Matt preaches it, and it has been instrumental in our training and reflects by how devoted and dedicated we are to one another.” Despite the on-court success, Goodman, who currently stands 6-foot-2, was far more concerned with the off-court success she would hope to have as a Miner. Always being the “tall girl,” she believed that the Miners would find success on the court, but it was off it where the concern laid. The social aspect of being in high school and on the volleyball team were what led to her departure from Judge Memorial. She said the Salt Lake City school “wasn’t a super healthy environment for me so that was a big part of why I transferred.” Goodman was nervous about meeting and getting along with her new teammates, especially TANZI PROPST/PARK RECORD Miners junior Hayden Goodman serves against visiting Spanish Fork in Park City’s 3-1 victory on Sept. 12. Goodman transferred to Park City after playing last season at Judge Memorial despite living within the city limits for the past eight years. since she was coming and taking over playing time from others. Instead of malice, Goodman TANZI PROPST/PARK RECORD Park City’s Hayden Goodman is all smiles after the Miners scored a point in the second set of their 3-1 victory over Spanish Fork on Sept. 12. Goodman leads the state in blocks with 129 on the season. Continued from B-1 Sports briefs JR. JAZZ PRE-SEASON SKILLS CLINIC Get some extra practice before the season begins with Basin Recreation’s Jr. Jazz Pre-Season basketball clinic. MUSIC AND MOTION Basin Recreation’s new Music and Motion program is perfect for getting the wiggles out. Kids ages 3-5 will run, skip, hop, and move to different beats while practicing coordination and enjoying silly activities. Program runs Nov.7 through Nov. 21 and meets Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at found love and support from her new teammates. Instead of just being “teammates” on the court, she found a family outside of it where the girls are in constant contact with each other. “Honestly, I wasn’t that nervous for volleyball but rather, way more stressed out with everything I just went through and then school because junior year is the biggest year academically,” Goodman said. “The team has been amazing though, helping me find my classes since the first day and then making sure I’m never alone. They’ve been super welcoming and I’m super happy. … It’s truly more than I ever could’ve expected.” Goodman’s success on and off the court is clearly translating to her next biggest obstacle in following high school; college. With multiple NCAA Division I offers already on the table, she is looking to find the best fit for her in volleyball and in education, a huge part of her life. “I’ve been in strong contact with most of the Ivy League schools, and they’ve all implied that I will get offers once I take the ACT,” Goodman said. “But I’m still not necessarily set on anything. Education is what I’m putting first but I know I can also get that away from the Ivy League. At the end of the day though, it comes down to the best fit for more for school and sport.” The Fieldhouse. Cost is $35. Learn more and register at basinrecreation.org.
