Show C-6 The Park Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, September 14-17, 2019 calendar of music & events happening this week Saturday, Sept. 14 ‘The Robot Zoo’ Exhibit Opening “The Robot Zoo,” an exhibit that explores the biomechanics of complex robots modeled on animals to discover how real animals work, will open on Saturday, Sept 14, at the Swaner EcoCenter, 1258 Center Drive at Kimball Junction. Robotic animals and hands-on activities will illustrate fascinating real-life characteristics, such as how a chameleon changes colors and how a fly walks on the ceiling. Admission is $6 per person, Children ages 3 and under are free. The exhibit will be on display until Jan. 5. For information, visit swanerecocenter.org. ‘The Cry of Independence’ at The Park City Library During “The Cry of Independence” that will run from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Park City Library, 1255 Park Ave., The public will learn about the Mexican War of Independence, learn a few myths and facts about the historic event and about how U.S. history is inseparable from Mexico’s history. For information, visit parkcitylibrary.org. Park City Songwriters Festival The Park City Songwriters Festival continues in various Park City venues on Saturday, Sept. 14. The festival will feature nightly headlining concerts, songwriters in the round, panels and workshops with music-industry insiders and Grammy Award winners. Park City Songwriter Festival is also founded to focus on mental health and addiction recovery challenges that persist in the music industry today. Partnering with the Grammies’ MusiCares organization and headlining artist Anders Osborne’s Send Me A Friend Foundation, Park City Songwriter Festival will celebrate mental wellness and clean living. Autumn Aloft Hot Air Balloon Festival The Autumn Aloft Hot Air Balloon Festival will return to Park City on Saturday, Sept. 14, and Sunday, Sept. 15. Morning launches for both days are at 8 a.m. on the North 40 Fields. A candlestick event will be presented Saturday night on Main Street after dark. All events are free and open to the public. For information and registration, visit ccofpc.org. ‘Matilda’ at the Egyptian Theatre The Ziegfeld Theater Company will continue its run of “Matilda: The Musical” through Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Egyptian Theatre, 328 Main St. Evening curtain for Saturday is 8 p.m. Sunday performances will start at 6 p.m. “Matilda,” based on the children’s novel by Roald Dahl, is a Tony Award-winning story about an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her destiny. Park City Film: ‘Pavarotti’ Park City Film will present Ron Howard’s 2019 documentary, “Pavarotti” rated PG-13, through Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Park City Library’s Jim Santy Auditorium, 1255 Park Ave. Saturday’s screening will begin at 8 p.m. Sunday’s screening starts at 6 p.m. “Pavarotti” examines the tenor through archival footage of his performances. Stream and Riparian Restoration Volunteers can help the Swaner EcoCenter staff and the Wild Utah Project to help build a beaver dam analog (BDA), a human-made structure designed to mimic the form and function of a natural beaver dam. Volunteers will also carry fence posts and cut willow branches. Volunteers should wear waders, waterproof shoes, eye protection and gloves and bring a sack lunch, water, sunscreen and bug spray. For information, visit swanerecocenter.org. Saturday Morning Nature Walk at the Swaner Preserve Saturday morning nature walks are held at 8:30 a.m. every Saturday at the Swaner EcoCenter. The cost is $10 per person and $5 for local residents. Depending upon the time of year, lucky hikers may see an abundance of birds, elk or even nesting sandhill cranes. Climbing Wall at the Swaner EcoCenter The Swaner EcoCenter, 1258 Center Drive, at Kimball Junction, offers climbing on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-3 p.m. The climbing wall is open to most ages. The EcoCenter will provide the climbing harness, but climbers must wear closed-toe shoes. Climbers under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult to sign a liability waiver. Avian Adventures at Swaner EcoCenter Utah birder Kenny Frisch, will lead a group on an early morning excursion from 7-10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Swaner Preserve, 1258 Center Drive at Kimball Junction, to view and identify local and migratory birds. Attendees should wear hiking shoes or boots that can get wet, and be prepared for uneven soggy ground. The EcoCenter will provide binoculars for each attendee. Registration is required. Park Silly Sunday Market Park Silly Sunday Market, the annual open-air green street fair, will open at 10 a.m. on every Sunday on Main Street. CONNECT also hosts a support group for parents and guardians of school-age youth from 4-5 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month at Parley’s Park Elementary School Counseling Center, 4600 Silver Springs Drive. In addition, Connect Summit County hosts a family mental health peer support group at 6:15 p.m. every last Tuesday of the month at the Park City Library, 1255 Park Ave. The sessions are free and open to the public. This group covers topics relevant to all people struggling with any type of disordered eating.
