It was nursed back to health by an inmate after a late-May frost threatened the entire crop. The jail has grown produce and used it in kitchens since at least 2010 and has sold its offerings at the Summit County Community Market since it started in 2017. Lt. Ken Jones, the jail commander, said the operation has continued to expand, with Health Department officials teaching classes, the Public Works department bringing in fill dirt and mulch and road crews constructing a structure in the last couple of years to replace previous, more temporary greenhouses. While the proceeds from sales and savings on produce costs don’t cover the water bill, Jones said the benefits can be seen in the inmates who work in the garden. “The alternative is sitting in dorms with negativity, fighting, idle time,” Jones said. The garden and greenhouse are on a patch of land that is planned for a future dormitory pod if the inmate population grows, but Jones doesn’t think that’ll be necessary. The next Community Market is from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at Park City Hospital, 900 Round Valley Drive. Inmates will be manning the booth selling onions, beets, zucchini, cabbage, lettuce and what Jones said are some very spicy radishes. Crews received a call around 10:30 p.m. when a concerned neighbor who was taking out his trash saw flames licking the side of the house across the street. He was able to alert the residents. Two engines and a ladder truck responded with about 10 firefighters. They were able to extinguish the fire and control the scene in about an hour, Rowser said, but some stayed all night to monitor the situation. Rowser said the fire was concentrated in one bedroom, and that crews had to go through the windows and roof to put it out. He said the leading theory is that the fire started on the exterior of the house, but the cause is still under investigation. Rowser said the family had working fire detectors. The building inspector will have to determine when and whether the structure will be habitable again, Rowser said.
