ALEXANDER CRAMER The Park Record A gas leak forced the evacuation of North Summit High School and North Summit Middle School Monday afternoon in Coalville. No injuries were reported. Shortly after 1 p.m. first responders received a phone call notifying them a gas line had been cut, Summit County community and public affairs director Krachel Murdock said. The 1.5-inch line was sliced by a construction crew working on a stretch of 100 East between the two schools. That road was shut down because of ongoing road work. Crews from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, North Summit Fire District and Summit County EMS responded to the scene. Murdock said the smell of gas was strong when she arrived on the scene. The odor prompted the evacuation of about a dozen middle schoolers and swimmers using the high school pool. As of 2:30 p.m., crews from Dominion Energy had shut off the line and the smell had begun to dissipate. The evacuations were kept to the schools, which were both cleared, and did not reach other buildings, Murdock said. The buildings were mostly empty, as school is not in session. Murdock said the break is in an area that’s hard to access and workers from Dominion Energy said it might take a bit of time to repair. on Kilby Road. A man reported that he left his vehicle unlocked overnight and when he came back in the morning, the glove box and center console were open and the contents had been strewn around the seat and floor. more than $200 were stolen from the New Balance store on July 12. An employee reported that two suspects left without paying for the merchandise. Deputies indicated the case would be referred to the Investigations Division. Sheriff’s Report A camping trip in the Uintas turned ugly last weekend, with Summit County sheriff’s deputies arresting a man on suspicion of aggravated domestic violence assault in the presence of a child. According to a report from the Sheriff’s Office, the 25-year-old man was camping with family members and had been drinking when he threatened to kill his father-in-law multiple times. He armed himself variously with a stick, a knife and a cast iron pan. The report indicated the incident happened at a campsite about a quarter mile east of the ranger station in the Soapstone Basin on Saturday night, and deputies investigated after learning of the situation the next day. They determined the man was the instigator and primary aggressor. He was arrested in West Valley City and taken to the Summit County Jail without incident. According to the Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement also responded to several other calls between Monday, July 15, and Sunday, July 21, including two break-ins in Silver Summit and a pair of vehicle burglaries at the Elk Meadows apartments on Kilby Road. Sunday, July 21 A woman reported the driver’s side rear window of her vehicle was smashed at the Elk Meadows apartments on Kilby Road. She said nothing was missing and it did not appear her vehicle had been rummaged through. A thief stole an Innova vehicle diagnostic tool from an unlocked vehicle in the Elk Meadows apartment complex Saturday, July 20 A 36-year-old Park City man was arrested on suspicion of assault after fighting on Mustang Loop Road in Pinebrook. The man was drinking with a couple of guests when a verbal fight started. He then punched the two victims in the face multiple times. A vehicle driving the wrong way in the Olympic Parkway roundabout led deputies to a DUI arrest. A 51-year-old Florida woman was pulled over and, after deputies smelled alcohol, she performed poorly in field sobriety tests. She was arrested on suspicion of DUI and taken to the Summit County Jail. Friday, July 19 A Kamas homeowner is renting a house to a relative, and filed a police report to get compensation for a broken French door from the tenant. The tenant, living on East Lower River Road, said the center door jam was already broken. Deputies indicated they would forward the case to the County Attorney’s Office. Thursday, July 18 A Kamas homeowner said one of the windows of his cabin on North Sunrise Ridge had been shot out by a BB or pellet gun. He the incident to be document and the case has been closed. Three pairs of shoes worth Wednesday, July 17 A 56-year-old Heber man died in a building on East Frontage Road. Deputies responded to a call that the man had collapsed and was having difficulty breathing. He was confirmed to have died at the scene and was transported to the Sheriff’s Office where the on-call detective and Office of the Medical Examiner would perform their investigations. Deputies indicated the case would be referred to the Investigations Division. A thief took a green kayak from an RV spot at the Park City RV Park on Rasmussen Road. Deputies indicated the theft happened overnight, that no evidence was left at the scene, and that the case would be referred to the Investigations Division. A Silver Summit garage was burglarized sometime between July 13 and 15. The victim had gone on vacation and when he returned found a golf bag missing. It contained approximately $5,400 worth of golf and camera equipment. Deputies indicated there are no witnesses or evidence. Tuesday, July 16 A would-be thief entered a man’s unlocked Toyota Tundra in Silver Summit, and only made off with about a dollar in change before being scared off by the owner. He was not located.
